It is anticipated that the wireless telephone service between Wellington and London will be opened for commercial purposes within about a fortnight. A six-mile water race is being constructed at Blackwater, on the West Coast, for the purpose of sluicing 800 acres of undulating hills. About 160 men are at present engaged on tire work. From its trading departments in 192930 the Christchurch City Council made profits amounting to £73,677 as compared with £60,161 the previous financial year, an increase of £13,516, stated, the chief engineer of the Manawatu-Oroua Power Board in his monthly news report to the board today. Replying to a request from a Canadian athletic organisation the New Zealand Rugby Union has decided that it cannot recommend anyone for a position as instructor and trainer in Rugby, but the secretary is to forward any literature dealing with the game in New Zealand. The request was contained in a letter from the secretary of the Canadian Legion Guards A.A.C., sponsors of the Memorial Field, Grace Bay, Nova Scotia. A strange craft made its appearance in the surf at Sumner the other day when members of the Sumner Surf and Life-Saving Club launched a cata.niaran. Its strange construction evoked interested comment from the onlookers and its launching was watched by. many residents and visitors. Briefly, it comprises two floats of Australian redwood, kauri ribbed, securely lashed together. It is capable of carrying about a dozen persons, who propel themselves with paddles. The craft rode the waves in fine style and was taken some little distance out from the shore. Finding that a portion of their pinus insignis plantation was shading fruit trees at their ochard at Redwood’s Valley, Nelson, Messrs Chamberlain and Stannard cut down a number of trees planted some twelve years ago. Instead of using them for firewood they sawed them for fruit case timber and some 2300 cases are being made. In addition, a number of lOin boards have been cut out. When an adjacent large block comes to the cutting stage the owners consider there will be enough case timber on the property for all requirements indefinitely for by the time the last of the present trees are cut, the natural regeneration following the first portion cut will give a supply of trees suitable for milling.
