WELLINGTON STOCK EXCHANGE.

LAST WEEK’S BUSINESS AND PRICES. The 6tock exchanges experienced dull trade last week, and the turnover was within small compass. There was comparatively heavy trading in two or three lines on a lower basis of values. Generally prices all round were lower, owing mainly to dividend reductions or the passing of dividends.

Government securities and the debentures of local bodies are receiving more attention from investors, and especially from that section who prefer fixed interest-bear-ing securities. N.Z. Government 43 per cents. (1938) changed hands at £9B 10s; the 53 per cents. (1941) at £95 5s and tho 53 per cents. (1933) at £99 17s 6d, and (1936) at £99 2s 6d and £99 7s 6d. SpringsEllesmero Power Board, 53 per cents. (1935) sold at £9B 10s; Lower Hutt Borough 6 per cents. (1944) at £101; Wanganui City 53 per cents. (1943) at £99, and Mount Eden Borough, 53 per cents. (1964) at £97 10s.

Business in bank shares was restricted, and the demand throughout the week was poor. Values of bank shares have eased, and give evidence of remaining low. The heaviest trading during tho week was in Bank of New Zealand and Commercial Bank shares, both being lower than for some time past. The reduction of the Bank of New South Wales dividend from 10 per cent, to 9 per cent, per annum following upon the elimination of tho bonus of 23 per cent, last year have made investors cautious regarding tho market value of bank shares, and many are holding off in the meanwhile. The course of sales of the bank shares which changed hands is as under:—

Bank of Australasia, £lO, £9 10s, £lO, £9 15s, £lO. Commercial Bank of Australia, 16s 7d, 16s 6d, 16s, 16s 2d, 16s 3d, 15s lid, 16s, 166 3d, 16s 13d, 16s 3d, 16s 2d, 16s 2d, 16s 2d, 16s Id, 16s 4d, 16s 3d, 16s 2d, 16s 2d, 16s 2d, 16s Id, 16s 4d, 16s 3d, 16s 2d, 16s 2d, 16s Id, 16s 3d, 16s. On rumours of the distribution of 5 per cent, dividend tho shares of Goldsbrough, Mort and Coy. showed a firming tendency, but later official information was to the effect that the directors had decided not to make any interim disribution, and the shares eased to 19s 9d, which is just below the face value of the scrip. Dalgety and Coy. sold down to £7 15s. There was fair trading in New Zealand Guarantee Corporation at 7s. Insurance shares were slow, but firm. New Zealand Insurance changed hands at 41s 9d and 525, and South British Insurance at 55s 9d. • A small business was done in Gas shares.
