HIGH SCHOOL’S GOOD KNOCK. UNITED MAKECREDITABLE 'DEBUT. Following upon repeated disappointments owing to unfavourable weather conditions, it was found possible to launch the Saturday cricket competitions, where the junior and third §rades were concerned, on the Saturay before last —the seniors having been delayed as the result of the representative team being engaged at Masterton. Matter's did not promise too w-ell on Saturday, but as the day advanced the rain lifted and play became passible, although the wicket was apt to be a little fiery ns the result of the_ warm sun getting on ' it. The seniors occupied the oval at the Sportsground, last year’s champions, Palmerston, trying conclusions with the newly formed club, United, while Old Boys and High School met on the adjoining wicket. Two lower grade matches were also engaged at Terrace End and the. High School grounds, the season’s activities being thus ushered in. in full strength for the first occasion. Opposing Old Bovs, High School occupied the wickets throughout the full course of the afternoon to run up 251 runs for the loss of but five wickets, which should place them in a secure position. Matters were much more uncertain in the other senior game. United. having made 128 at'their visit, to which Palmerston replied with 36 for the loss of two wickets, with the result that the g alne appears to be in the balance. THE HONOURS BOARD. BATTING. PALMERSTON v.’ UNITED. The newly formed club, . United signalled their entry upon their activities for the season by winning the toss of the coin and Peckston, who was leading the side for the day, elected to take first strike, sending Broughton and Jamieson to the wickets. _ However, the adoption of these tactics did not promise over well when the partnership was separated at 17, Jamieson getting his leg in front to a ball from MacDonald, the ea-Pei filing player, after contributing half a dozen. Thompson, who had displayed promising form last season, failed to get properly going, although he assisted Broughton to carry the total to 26 before being beaten by Berquist, a re-
