WATER PRESSURE
IMPROVED CONDITIONS. It was mentioned at yesterday’s meeting of the Palmerston North Fire Board that, since the installation of the pumping plant by the City Council the town’s water pressure had improved considerably. The chairman (Mr A. J. Graham) in stating that the pressure had increased approximately 50 per cent., laughingly added that no doubt the members representing the insurance companies on the board would reduce their rates accordingly. A perusal of the record book maintained in the fire station disclosed the fact that the pressure varies considerably throughout the course of each day, Mondays, which are generally employed by house-wives as washing days, proving to -be the greatest drain on the city’s supplies, with consequent effect on the pressure in the mains. A comparison of the hourly readings on December 2 twelve months ago showed that at 7 a.m., the pressure had been, 501bs. per square inch which had retreated to 161bs. at 8 a.m. It had then risen steadily thereafter until at 9 a.m., it was 20lbs, 221bs at 10 a.m 29 lbs at 11 a.m. and 31)bs at noon. While there was again an increased drain on the supply between that hour and one o’clock, it steadily rose thereafter until at 10 p.m. the pressure had increased to 641bs. Since the pumping station had operated its effect had been made apparent by the fact that on the corresponding day this month the pressure had, been 701bs. at 7 a.m., 631bs. at 8 a.m., 711bs. 'at 9 a.m., 701bs. at 10 a.m., 681bs. at 11 a.m., 741bs. at noon, rising to 861bs. by 10 p.m. Naturally there was apt to be considerable variance in the daily readings and whereas’ on the Sffcl inst. the pressure was, 61 lbs. at , 7 a.m., it went as low as 351bs. by 9 a.m., then jumped to 681bs. an hour later to finally reach 751bs. by noon, although the ten o’clock reading the same night disclosed that it had retreated to 651b5..
The improved conditions prevailing were viewed with general favour by the members.
