WORKERS AT AWAPUNI. TEAM DEPARTS FOR ELLERSLIE. Glorious weather prevailed at Awapuni this morning lor training operations but there was not a great deal of fast work attempted. This centre will have half a dozen candidates figuring at Ellerslic on Saturday week, while a similar number will go through to Hastings, but the big majority are waiting for Otaki where 20 claim engagements for tho first day and 28 on the second. , , „ G W New returned home following Avondale, but left the Stakes winner King Colossus, in the north in readiness for the Auckland meeting to follow. Teller, the Paper Money representative from Mrs McDonald s stable, also stayed over after Ins outing in the Avondale Stakes, but lie will be joined to-morrow by La Poupee, Chief Clerk, Chief Cook, and Mirabilary, who are due to go through to Ellerslie to-night. Mirabilary (C. Broughton) was one of the early workers, the grey mare being sent along over a mile on the plough in company with Magic Land (W. Shearman). The latter made the pace in the early stages, but dropped out about three furlongs from home, leaving the mare to finish her task in 1.50 1-5 after running the first two furlongs in 26 2-5 sec, three in 42 sec., the half mile in 55 sec and five in 1.7 1-5. She was going quite generously at the finish. , La Poupee (Shearman), Chief Clerk (C. Broughton) and Chief Cook (Chisholm), Mrs McDonald s three Welcome Stakes candidates at Ellerslie were associated in a scamper over half a mile on the course proper. Running next to the rails, La Poupee, after being the last to move, was going very nicely at the finish, the Tea Tray filly, having tho advantage over her companions after taking 13 4-5 sec. for the first furlong and the full distance in 50 4-5 sec. La Poupee will be ridden by H. N. Wiggins) Chief Clerk by T. Green and Mirabilary by Alan McDonald, but no definite engagements have been made for the other pair. With King Colossus also in the Welcome Stakes, Awapuni might well play a prominent role. Courageous and Shortly, two members of W. Hawthorne’s team—this mentor having now taken up residence at Awapuni —were sent a good strong working gallop the reverse wav on the plough in preparation for their trip to Ellerslie. but they were not put against the watch. Otairi and Risk, who will represent L. Knapp at the same fixture, were likewise restricted to pace work. The quartette are, however, very well. They will not leave for the scene of action till next Fiery Comet, Rule Britannia, .Desert Lad, Brown Abbey and Sporting Chance are down to make the trip through to Hastings for Saturday’s fixture, but of the quintette Brown Abbey was the only one to gallop, this small, but good looking, youngster being sprinted half a mile on the course proper, with the flags a fair distance out, m companv with Braggart. The latter finished the better to complete his task in 52 2-5 sec. Braggart, while he shows rather much daylight underneath, has a great raking stride and ho will be given an opportunity to show his paces on the second day at Otaki. Skyrider (J. McDowell) will return to the hurdling branch at Otaki the course on which she opened her career as a jumper. The Day Comet mare evidenced her appreciation of her lightweight pilot this morning when she showed the way to the New Zealand Cup candidate, Pahu (W. Broughton) the whole way in a gallop over a mile on the grass to complete her task in I.47sec. The chestnut mare finished full of running and Pahu made little impresswn on her in the run down the straight. Merry Damon, another New Zealand Cup candidate, had Callamart as a companion in a working gallop on the plough, being picked up by ■Wanderlust in the final stages. While they were not asked to go against the watch, it was a useful gallop. Like Pahu, Merry Damon will be given his next race in the Ling Memorial Stakes at Otaki next month. , . , • Keddar (W. Broughton) is being speeded up although he does not claim any immediate engagements and the Arrowsmith gelding snowed promise of his returning to form in the near future when he ran along six furlongs on the grass in company with Glenrossie (C. Broughton), the last five furlongs being negotiated in 1.6 2-5 sec Glenrossie will compete at Otaki. Dobbin (C. France), who is down to compete over the battens on the second day at Otaki, ran five furlongs on the grass in 55 sec. without being required to give of his best. Although he will race over the battens.at Otaki, there is a possibility that his mentor will try him out once again among the sprinters.
