RANGITIKEI.

CHARITY CUP RUGBY. (From Our Own Correspondent). MARTON Sept. 21. It has been said that the administration of Rugby in Rangitikei has this season not been in very capable hands and the season culminated on Saturday in a fiasco being made of the final match of the year. Tho Handy Cup was donated last season by Rev. F. J. Handy for competition between the winners and runners-up of tho senior competition, but as the management committee of the union was unable to announce the winners of the Senior Shield, they decided that as the benevolent fund was in need of money, combined teams from Athletic and Hunterville, and Old Boys and Rata should meet at Marton Park. Firstly, there were seven defections from- the two combined teams, and with some of the reserves not putting in an appearance the game did not commence until 5.30 p.m. It was decided that two thirty minute spells should be played, but no sooner had the game started than players of both sides made it obvious that they did not intend to take proceedings seriously. There were parts of the first spell which proved interesting enough, but a good movement would be marred a minute later by the players making fun. A short interval was taken and on' the resumption the play had not been in progress more than five minutes when tho referee, Rev. P. H. Leonard, walked off the field to be followed by the players. Fortunately there was only a very poor attendance, but those who were present did not receive much inducement to patronise Charity Cup matches in future seasons. Thus ended one of tho leanest seasons yet experienced by tho Rangitikei Union, with the gate takings some £IOO down on. last season, and the standard of play in all grades, week indeed. BULB SHOW TAKINGS.

Tho bulb and spring flower show conducted on Thursday and Friday by the St. Stephen’s Ladies”'Guild ended most successfully. There was a good attendance on Friday night and stallholders and the tearooms committees were kept very busy. Despite a small decrease on last year’s takings, the financial results achieved were as gratifying. Tho takings totalled £321 17s 3d. The committee, stallholders and all who assisted are to be congratulated on tho marked success which attended their efforts. RATA DAIYR COMPANY.

At a meeting of directors of the Rata Dairy Coy. on Wednesday it was decided to electrify the factory throughout and instal a mechanical stoker for pasteurising. These two installations will mean a considerable saving to the company. The company have also decided to consign the season’* output through tho port of Wellington. CARS COLLIDE. Cars driven by Mr Henry Franke, of Marlon, and Miss E McGregor, of Turakina Valle}’, came into collision on a recent morning on the Bridle Track, the impact taking place on a nasty corner. Miss McGregor was accompanied by her sister. Both cars were extensively damaged, and Mr Franke sustained three broken ribs. GENERAL. A mooting of tho Huntervillc branch of tho Acclimatisation Society was held on Thursday evening, Mr P. C. Rhodes presiding. Tho chairman explained that tho object was to discuss a proposed Fish Pond for Huntervillc. Mr A. Dalzell offered the uso of a portion of his section, in which trout fry could bo kept, for a time, beforebeing liberated. The chairman was appointed to visit Wellington at tho first opportunity and inquire what assistance would bo forthcoming from the Acclimatisation Society. Mr Rhodes, who had visited tho Feilding fish ponds, outlined what was required and suggested that members take an opportunity some time of visiting Feilding and seeing the work for themselves. There was a fair attendance at the progressive euchre competition held in the Marton D.H. School on Friday _ night. Prizes were won by Mrs Irwin (ladies) and Mrs Hart (men’s). Consolation awards went to Mrs Wood and Mr Mclndoc. A much less severe, earthquake than was felt in the early hours’ of Saturday morning was experienced by local residents at 6.58 a.m. to-day. It proved to be only a light shock and was not accompanied by heavy oscillation.

The Morgan Lodge, U.A.0.D., held its 38th anniversary in the Druids’ Hall on Tuesday evening. There were about 100 visiting brethren from various lodges, and many friends ■ present. Dancing and competitions were indulged in and appreciated by all. There was a fair attendance at tho euchre party and dance held in the Upper Tutaneui Hall, on Friday evening. Prizes wero won by Mrs E. Kelly and Mr L. McKay. The ladies dispensed a dainty supper, after which dancing was participated to music supplied by Mrs Maiden. Mr J. Hammond acted as M.C. PERSONAL.

Mr H. G. Tobeck, manager of tho Taihapo branch of Dalgety and Coy., has received notice of his transfer to Gisborne. Mr W. E. Thompson arrived in Huntcrville from Raetihi on Wednesday to take up duty at the Huntervillo branch of the Bank of New Zealand.
