BISHOP OF NEWCASTLE.
SYDNEY, Sept. 18. Dr. Neville Stuart Talbot, Bishop of Pretoria, has been chosen Bishop of Newcastle, in succession to the late Bishop Long. Archdeacon Charlton, commenting on Dr. Talbot’s election to the See of Newcastle, said that new blood would be welcomed, as the Church in Australia had got into a rut from which an outstanding personality like that of Dr. Talbot should help materially to lift it. / Dr. Talbot did fine work as a chaplain in France during the war. He is a well-known writer on ecclesiastical subjects. APPOINTMENT CAUSES SURPRISE Received September 19, 10.0 a.m. CAPETOWN, Sept. 18. The news of the appointment of the Bishop of Pretoria to the bishopric of Newcastle has caused great surprise. Probably no one is more surprised than the Bishop himself; he is on the high seas returning from, the Lambeth Conference. The Dean of P/etoria and other dignitaries express the opinion that it is extremely doubtful if the Bishop will accept the appointment.
