ALSATIAN DOGS

] HIGHER LICENSE FEES

LEGISLATION REQUIRED. (Bv Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 18. The Government’s attention was called by Mr J. Linklater in the House of Representatives to-day to the senous complaints of Manawatu farmers that Alsatian dogs have caused havoc among tbeir flocks by sheep-worrying. The member suggested the Dog Registration Act be amended to increase the registration fee as a method of diminishing the number of these dogs. Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle, Minister of Internal Affairs, replied that he had received requests from certain quarters that the Registration Act be amended so that the fees for dog licenses could be increased. These requests have been placed on record until a suitable opportunity of amending the law could be afforded. It was not practicable this session, but he would have the representations considered.

Tho matter of Alsatian dogs was raised at the meeting of the general committee of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association this week when, following a suggestion that the existing legislation should be amended in order to allow additional taxation to be imposed on the owners of certain breeds of dogs, Mr Linklater intimated that he would bring the question before ' Parliament.
