WOODVILLE

FIRE BOARD. (From Our Own Correspondent). WOODVILLE, Sept. 18. The quarterly meeting of the Fire Board, was held yesterday afternoon, there being present Messrs H. P. Ilorne (chairman), A. 11. Ilustwick, F. D. Mackie, J. W. Norrie and W. vG. Hay. Superintendent McNeil was also in attendance. The Department of Internal Affairs wrote advising that it would be necessary for the board to make application to the Local Government Loans Board for sanction to borrow tho sum of £3OO, by way of overdraft. It was decided tb write Hon. E. A. Ransom, drawing hi» attention to the matter, and also to refer to clause 32 of the Fire Brigades Act, 1926. It was also resolved to forward a copy of the reply of tho Intornal Affairs Department to the Minister, pointing out that the clause of the Act mentioned therein does not apply to tho board. The valuation of tho assessors for tho equipment of the brigade, amounting to £285 12s 2d, was approved. It was resolved to supply the superintendent with a list of tho dangerous goods stored in the borough. Superintendent H. McNeil reported on the working of the brigade for tho period from September Ist to 16th, A letter was received "from the Post and Telegraph Department, Masterton, in reference to direct communication being obtained between tho Woodville telephone exchange and the fire station, to enable them to operate the siren. It was pointed out that it was necessary to apply to the Dannevirke Power Board. —The secretary was instructed to do so. The secretary stated that 500 feet of hose had arrived, and it was decided to place an order for a further 500 feet. The matter of attending fires outside tho borough was raised, and it was resolved to get a list of names of those who required tho brigade. It was decided that the charge for service be £7 10s per hour, or _ fraction thereof. A deal of routine business was discussed, and various requirements of the brigade wore authorised to be supplied. The question of the of the buildings and section by the Woodville Borough Council, of the Woodville Fire Station and section, to be taken over by the Fire Board, was discussed. The Act states that all plant, land, buildings, or othor property, becomes vested in, or is transferred to a Fire Board, and shall be valued, either by agreement or by arbitration. The valuation placed on tho section and buildings by the council was roAftor an inspection of the building by members of the board, it was decided that tho board appoint a valuer, and withhold in tho meantime, the working of that section of tho Firo Brigades Act Which, in brief, enables the board to refuse to accept any land, buildings, etc. the refusal to be mrdo within two months after the first meeting of the board. Mr C. J. Hansard (Dannevirke) was appointed valuer, and, failing him, Mr Craven, of Dannevirke, is to bo asked to act in that capac~A discussion arose on tho question of the brigade’s obligation to attend fires outside the water area. The superintendent reported that tho brigade was called out to a fire recently, but could give assistance, on account of it being outside the water area. After several members had spoken tho discussion lapsed. ANGLERS’ CLUB. The annual meeting of the Anglers’ Club, was held last evening, Mr S. Turnbull presiding over a good attendance, including visitors of kindred clubs. The annual report and balance-sheet was read and adopted. The following new members were elected :-L. Fulton, W. Mair, O. Draper and Master Smith. It was decided to hold the first competition on the opening day. The question of instituting an cel-catching competition amongst b°y 3 was discussed, and it was decided that, as the meeting was of the opinion that lads often took quite a few trout, it was inadvisable to carry the scheme on Mr Turnbull welcomed visitors from Fending, Dannevirke, Pahiatua and Palmerston North. At the conclusion of the annual meeting, a social evening was held a toast list being honoured. A REST ROOM. Ai a largely attended meeting of the Woodville branch of the Women’s Institute yesterday presided over by Mrs J. b. Nelson, it was decided by 34 votes to 22, aftor considerable discussion that a site f° r a building and rest room offered free by Mr Simpson and situated in Vogel Street, be selected. Two sites were under offer. Miss Murphy and Miss Redwood acted as scrutineers. Tho institute lias received a donation of £IOO from Mrs Burnett towards the project. FIRE BRIGADE.

Tho fortnightly meeting of the Fire Brigade was held on Monday evening, Superintendent McNeil presiding. Ine question of the return football match with Pahiatua was raised by the superintendent, and it was decided to play the game on Wednesday week. The resignation of Driver F. De Malmanche was reoeivod with regret. A letter was road from the secretary of the Fire Board, advising tha Captain McNeil had been appointed superintendent, and Lieut. McLean depu superintendent. —Received. Mr J. Buriace was appointed a member. GENERAL. Mr and Mrs H. Coston and family have gone to their new home in the Waikato. Prior to their departure from Woodville t> o y were entertained by their neighbours at asocial gathering at their residence, Ahkaturanga Block, and presented with a travelling rug. The suppliers of Riverbank factory also farewelled Mr and Mrs Coston, presenting to each of them, a handsome suitcase. . At the Dannevirke spring flower show. Miss Sheen and Mr F. Shearman, of Woodville, were prominent in tho prize list. Miss Sheen, the present holder of the silver rose bowl again carried off this trophy with her collection of narcissi varieties), Mr Shearman secured fire place in the class for 6 varieties. In addition Miss Sheen carried off seven firsts and the chamiponship, also four seconds, and the points prize, the Graham Shield. Mr Shearman was runner-up.
