AORANGI BRIDGE.

TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS ... IGNORED. STRUCTURE DANGEROUS. The necessity for tlie taking of strict precautions in regard to weight restrictions over the Aorangi bridge was mentioned by the chairman (Cr. Campbell) at yesterday’s meeting of the Oroua County Council. The clerk of works for the new bridge was very alarmed at the state of the old structure, Cr. Campbell stated, and had brought under the speaker’s notice the fact that both speed and weight restrictions on the bridge were being ignored. * In the chairman’s, opinion there was only one way to deal with offenders, and that was to take instant action against them. The council had stipulated a speed limit of five miles per. hour over the bridge and an axle load limit also, and to keep the bridge open until the new one was completed it was imperative that these regulations be enforced. There was also the question of stock traffic over the bridge, Cr. Campbell went on to say, and to him it would seem necessary to approach the Manawatu Auctioneers’ Association in regard to the cattle being taken across the river instead of using the bridge. Other councillors upheld the remarks of the chairman and it was decided that the chairman and the engineer take in’ hand the matter of having the bridge protected against excessive speed and weight.
