BANQUET AMID ICE
3 P.M. EDTTTON
ANDREE AND COMPANIONS. PRIVATIONS OF EXPLORERS. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received September 11, 11.5 a.m. STOCKHOLM, Sept. 10. A message from tire whaler Isbjoern says the diary of Strindberg, one of the members of the Andree expedition, reveals a tragic story of disappointed hopes and heroic facing of death. It discloses that the balloon landed on a huge iceberg on July 14, 1897, after three days’ flight. A march southwards began on July 22, and the party discovered White Island on September 17. They celebrated with a banquet in a snowhouse built on a glacier, but part of this broke off and they, drifted to sea on October 2. The party regained the island on October 6, but next day they were overwhelmed by a snowstorm.
Entries after that reveal advancing weakness, but no word of despair until the entries ceased on October 17.
