FATAL HOTEL FIRE.
INQUEST ON VICTIM
Per Press Association
WELLINGTON, Sept. 11. An inquest on Nicol Ferguson Cameron, who was found dead m a corridor of the Gresham Hotel during the fire there on August 16, was held today. The Coroner, Mr T. B. McNeil, S.M., returned a verdict that deceased died from asphyxiation by smoke, as there was no reason apparently why deceased should not have been able to make a safe escape, as the evidence showed that there was no obstruction in the passages and the fire escapes were in perfect condition. The Coroner said the evidence showed that Cameron was a heavy smoker and there seemed to be no doubt that he was smoking in his room and by some means the bedclothes caught alight; also, on account of two drinks of Drandy he had had ho might not have been normal at the time the alarm was given.
