GARRISON BAND.
MEETING OF COMMITTEE
ENTRY FOR CONTEST.
The monthly meeting of the Palmerston North Garrison Band was held last evening, Mr J. Mounsey presiding. Others present were Messrs I'. J." Oakley, J. W. Boon, H. Bergerson, H. Cairns, D. T. Denniston and Captain McGaskill. Apologies lor absence were received from Messrs M. H. Oram, J. H. Dick, J. Bowden and the baud conductor. “We have rendered two programmes during the month, one in the Square and one at the Terrace End Park,” reported the band conductor (Lieutenant J. Cox). “The bandsmen are enthusiastic and I have no difficulty in fulfilling all engagements. The membership of the senior band totals 27 and there are twelve boys in the junior band. An engagement lias been accepted for the Spring Show in November. The band will also assist the Blind Boys’ Institute Band at a concert to be held in the Opera House. The bandsmen have expressed the unanimous opinion that the band should compete in the A grade championship to be held in Wellington early next year. Terrace End Park is very suitable for moonlight recitals. A programme could consist, of band numbers, a singing competition, dancing on the green and community singing. Temporary lighting could be arranged. December, January and February would be the best months. The Esplanade is also very suitable for moonlight concerts.”—The report was adopted. , The engagement of the band at a fee of £2O for two days of tho Spring Show fixture by the Manawatu and West Coast A." and P. Association was confirmed. Appreciation was expressed of the offer. The Palmerston North branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association forwarded a donation of £2 2s in recognition of the services rendered by the band at the Anzac Day observance. The contribution to the funds was acknowledged with thanks. It was decided that the band should compete in the A grade at the contest next year conditional on sufficient financial support being available. It was ostimated that tho cost of sending the band to Wellington would be about £l5O. . The matter of arranging moonlight band recitals wms referred to the conductor, the suggestion being commended. Tho chairman reported that there was a good feeling of cameraderio with tho Feilding Band and the two musical organisations wero working in unison.
Tributes were paid to the work of the conductor, and it was stated that the band had improved very considerably.
