TERRACE END SCHOOL

FANCY DRES'S BALL. ANNUAL FUNCTION. The Terrace End School children made a very pretty picture at the Manawatu A- and P. Hall last evening on • the occasion of their annual fancy dress ball, the event reflecting great credit on all who assisted towards repeating the success that has been achieved in former years. The costumes were both quaint and picturesque while the dancing was entered into with zest by the juveniles wlro reflected the careful tuition of the teachers. Some 450 children occupied the floor, and their interpretation of various steps not belonging to the present age was a spectacle well worth seeing. The decorations in the entertainment hall and those in the agricultural hall, kindly lent by the Manawatu Golf Club, formed a very appropriate setting for the occasion. There were streamers of pink and cherry shades suspended from the ceiling, while large festooned lights cast a soft glow over the ballroom. Coloured lights arranged along the walls and the draping of the stand occupied by the orchestra in the school colours, blue and black, completed the colourful effect. The supper tables were daintily arranged with spring flowers, the children being given a dainty sitdown supper. Much credit is due to the members of the staff, under Mr A. "VV. Thompson, headmaster, who capably controlled the proceedings, and also to the men’s and ladies’ committees, who all worked hard to bring the evening to a happy and successful'close. After the grand march, the ball was opened by the Mayor, Mr A. J. Graham, w fio was welcomed by the chairman of the committee, Mr W. B. Cameron. Apologies for absence were received from Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., Mrs Nash and Mr F. AV. Moore. Mesdames A. J.. Graham, AV. B. Cameron, F. Kendall and A. AV. Thompson were each presented with bouquets by the senior girls. In welcoming Mr Graham, the chariman said he felt that no Terrace End ball would be complete without the presence of the Mayor. Mr Camerou thanked the parents for dressing the children in such beautiful and varied costumes, especially as no prizes were being awarded this year. All should be proud of the headmaster and staff and the ladies’ committee, whose co-operation had made the function possible, and the success it no doubt would be. On behalf of the committee he would in conclusion like to express sincerest thanks to the Manawatu Golf Club for placing the decorations used at their recent ball at the disposal of the Terrace End School.

Mr Graham expressed great pleasure at being asked to open the function, adding that he hoped all would have a merry time. He congratulated the children on their grand march to the tune of “The Toy-maker’s Dream,” and expressed the hope that those taking part would have pleasant dreams after it. The letters “T.E.5.,” said the Mayor, stood for “teachers encourage scholars.” It was to be desired, then, that they (the pupils) would do all they could in return for their teachers and pay attention to their school work. Mr Graham concluded by stating that he hoped the children would make merry and have a good time, returning home tired but happy. The members of the ladies’ committee who controlled the supper arrangements were Mesdames AV. B. Cameron (convener), F. Kendall (secretary), J. Davies, J. Davidson, -H. R. Smith, AV. Peterson, AV. L.
