TAHITI MISHAP
i ADVICE FROM MASTER. SHIP MAY BE ABANDONED. TO-NIGHT. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Aug. 16. The Union Company received advice from the master of the Tahiti, timed 3.15 p.m. to-day, stating- that the water is gaining in the after end of the ship. They are endeavouring to cope with this, but it may be necessary to consider abandoning the ship to-night. ' The Union Company does not think it likely that the Ventura and Tafua will be able to reach the Tahiti before Monday morning.' It is reported that steps will be taken to bring the Marama, which is at present-laid up at Wellington, on the Tahiti’s run, but the company says it is too early for such a step evdn to be considered. WIRELESS ASSISTANCE. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON,- Aug. 16. The Post and Telegraph Department Iras arranged, in addition to the. usual continuous attendance at Auckland, Wellington and Awarua radio stations, a continuous attendance at the Ghathams and Raratonga, so as to afford all possible - assistance to the ' Tahiti; also, the telegraph offices at Wellington and Auckland will be open all night. The Tahiti, on route from Wellington to Sail Francisco, lost her propeller at 4 a.m. to-day, when about 460 miles from Raratonga. Full details are lacking.
