KAILWAY LOSSES
SERIOUS IN N.S.W. THOUSANDS OF POUNDS WEEKLY DRASTIC ECONOMIES PROBABLE. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received August 15, 10.15 a.in. SYDNEY, Aug. 15. The railway revenue in New South Wales since July 1 has fallen at a rate of approximately £90,000 per week, compared with last year. The State Government is considering further drastic economics and will probably close a number of non-paying country lines as well as approaching the Arbitration Court for a reduction •in wages in all grades of employees. The only alternative is wholesale dismissals. POSITION IN ENGLAND. ROAD TRANSPORT COMPETITION. Received August 15, 10.5 a.m. LONDON, Aug. 14. The executive of the National Union of Railwaymen, acting on the instructions of the annual conference, has formulated new demands, including a minimum of £2 10s a week for all adult employees. In the meantime the companies concerned show a declino in traffic receipts, owing to tho competition of road transport.
