THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY.

It will have been noticed, particularly by smokers, that the Government propose to “aid” the tobacco growing industry in this Dominion. WGth a view to that end the duty on imported leaf is to be lowered by Is per pound while the excise duty on the home grown leaf is to be increased by Is per pound. The Minister for Finance stated that this would encourage a greater use of the New Zealand product. Growers of the fragrant leaf, however, view the new duties from a different angle and protests are already being made to members and Ministers. The Nelson province growers say it will reduce the price obtainable by them and incidentally ruin the business. How the new adjustment will aid the industry is best known to Ministers and their advisers.
