AN UNUSUAL CASE.
STAAIP DUTIi UNPAID. An unusual case was heard in the Police Court to-day when Airs Lucilla Agnes AlcLachlan was charged with receiving amounts of over £2 from Winifred Tozer rendering the receipt liable to duty, and dividing the amounts paid into two sums of 30s each with intent to evade payment of the duty. Alessrs W. F. Durward and T. R. Lees, J.P.’s, were on the Bench. Air Laurenson appeared for defendant, and entered a plea of guilty oil her behalf. Detective Russell stated that defendant had accepted fortnightly payments of £3 from a tenant of her property in Taonui Street for five years and entered them in weekly payments of 30s. The amount of duty not paid was 19s sd. Air Laurenson said that defendant was a widow of small means and was not accustomed to business transactions. The matter had been reported to the Commisisoner by the tenant when he vacated the premises. Defendant was unaware that she was committing a breach of the law. Defendant was fined £l, with 10s costs.
