DIVING BENEATH THE ICE. SIR HUBERT WILKINS’ PLANS. NO HELP FROAI AUSTRALIA. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received July 17, 10.15 a.m. LONDON, July 16. In an interview to-day, Sir Hubert Wilkins said that lie would bo leaving for New York in Alay. The actual expedition would begin at Spitzbergen for Alaska. The object of the expedition was purely geophysical; it would show the world the possibility of reaching the pole by diving beneath the ice. He would be able to stay under for a maximum of two and a half days. Sir Hubert added that he had arranged to broadcast his progress whilst on the surface. “Why does not Australia help me? It is remarkable that an Australian is heading the expedition without a single penny from his own country,” the famous explorer concluded.
