Baxter, of 184 a Derwent Street, island Bay, and the crew of Ins launch, had the unenviable experience of being caught in the southerly gale that sprang up. The force of the gale was so strong that tho launch was unable to turn back to return to Island Bay, but was forced up the coast, finally, gaining shelter at Castle Point.
News of the safety of the launch and all on board reached Mrs Baxter at lier home at about two o’clock yesterday afternoon. •‘I have never spent a day like it,” she said last night. “I rang up every lighthouse on tne East Coast so that word could be passed on. “You know,” she added, “it was a perfect night when Mr Baxter left. He set out for Palliser at midnight on Tuesday, and there wasn’t the slightest suspicion of a storm. Mr Baxter always knew that he would get caught in. a storm some time or other, and he had always said that if he did he would try to make for Castlepoint.” Mrs Baxter said that the launch had a very hard time getting to shelter, and that the wind was so bad that he dared not turn back. The party will remain at Castlepoint until the weather is favourable lor their return.
