SHEARERS’ AWARD

LOWERING OF WAGES. STRIKE IN N.S.Wi GRAVE VIEW TAKEN. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). Received July 16, 10.20 a.m. SYDNEY, July 16. Five hundred men employed in the Moree district have ceased work as a protest against the new pastoral award. Fifteen hundred will meet in the various shearing sheds to-day. The officials of the Australian Workers’ Union take a grave view of the situation. ' The award is regarded as the forerunner to many other measures to bring down wages. It is suggested that it will inspire an economic crisis, to which the conditions of recent years have been leading Australia. Judge Dethridge has reduced wages all round by approximately 20 per cent. The minimum rate for flock wethers, ewes and lambs is 52s 6d a hundred. The former rate was 41s. Tho minimum rate for rams above six months is fixed at 65s a hundred.
