GOLF IN BRITAIN.

the open championship. WON BY BOBBY JONES. FIERCE AMERICAN ATTACK. (United Press Association.— By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received June 21, 10.5 a.m. LONDON, June 20. Bobby Jones, of America won the British open golf championship. With Compston leading after a record round at the end of the third stage from Jones, the big crowd becanu molt excited at the prospect ot an English victory. , , ~ , Jones, who preceded Compston, damped the British hopes with three for the second hole, measuring oLj yards, where his drive hit a spectator on the head and rebounded into a bunker. But Jones reached the green with his second and holed out with a six yard putt. He took three putts on two greens, then took seven strokes at the eighth, where he struck trouble at the edge of the green. Thus the British hope? rose. Jones took Jd outward. and went home with 37. Wonderful recoveries alternated with poor Compston had a great chance of restoring the title to Britain, but the strain of the morning round seemed to have made him tired and limp. Ho missed putts and sliced, and pulled drives Sometimes his approaches were short and sometimes too strong. It was a sorry breakdown. He went out in 43. , . , Only a miracle could save nun. but this did not happen, as he came home in 39.

ROBSON’S GREAT EFFORT. LONDON, June 19. The following qualified for the last two rounds:—Bobby Jones, 142; Robson 143; Horton Smith, 14o; Compston, 147; Macdonald Smith, Diegel. Moe and Rodgers, 147; Barnes, 14Sj Cotton, Alliss and C. Whitcombe, 149; Bover and R. Whitcombe, 150; E. Whitcombe, 152: Abo Mitchell, lod; Hirigoyen, 154; Tolley, 155. Unexpectedly it was Robson who made the most heroic British effort against the fierce American attack on the golf championship. Robson played so well that it only required fours lor the last two holes to equal Jones, lmt he missed a six-foot putt. Cotton has not lived up to expectations, chiefly owing to an attack of hooking.
