DRAWN MATCH
INDIFFERENT PLAYING CONDITIONS. AUSTRALIANS GO CHEAPLY. A TAME ENDING. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received May 21, 9.45 a.m. LONDON, May 20. As only five minutes remained after the Australians’ depressing innings had ended, Marylebone did not bat again. The rain cleared and play was resumed at one o’clock. A slippery ball hampered the bowlers and the attack was entrusted to the slow bowlers, Stevens and Peebles. Jackson continued to bat attractively, although he was dropped on the boundary when 38. Conditions after the luncheon adjournment still favoured the batsmen and Jackson reached his first 50 of the tour by hitting Peebles for six. Shortly afterwards he cut a ball hard to Hendren at short slip. Ivippax and Ponsford batted confidently before they gave easy catches. Richardson was shaky from the start, while Grimmett’s wicket was shattered after a vigorous innings. Allen bowled well, but the interest had vanished from the match which, like the previous fixture, was interesting for two days and then ended tamely in a draw. Fairfax nevertheless batted as though his side was in a desperate position. Detailed results are as follow: AUSTRALIA. First innings 285 Second Innings.
