DISASTROUS TORNADO.
DAMAGE IN AMERICA. NEW YORK, May 19. A message from Memphis (Tennessee) states: “Sixteen were killed and a hundred injured, the majority of whom were negroes, when a tornado swept the plantations. Cabins and farm buildings were torn to pieces. “Medical aid is being rushed to the area, from which communication has been broken off. The tornado caused 85,000 dollars’ worth of damage to the business section of Somersville (Tennessee) and Texarkana (Arkansas). “South-west Arkansas and north-east Texas are faring badly from floods. The Red River flodoing swept away bridges, cut off highway and railway traffic, and drove residents in the lowlands to higher points. Rescue parties are battling with the swirling flood water in an endeavour to rescue flood victims. Crop losses already are tremendous. “The rainfall, which has been heavy for many days, is expected to continue, and if it does it is feared that many levees will break.”
