SPEEDWAY AT OVAL.
DIRT TRACK RACING. NEW SPORT LIKELY. Negotiations are in train by the Manawatu and West Coast Agricultural and Pastoral Association for the establishment of speedway racing at the Palmerston North Oval, and provided satisfactory arrangements can be made the sport of broadsiding on dirt tracks will be introduced to this centre. • Should the agreement eventuate, and it is understood that there is no reason to anticipate that it should not, efforts will be made to run dirt track speed competitions during the Spring Show. It is reported that the speedway which it is proposed to establish at this centre will be linked up with those already in existence at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, and that the same overseas riders will be competing at Palmerston North. It is understood that, in the event of negotiations being settled to the satisfaction of all parties, seating to accommodate 3000 people and costing £3OOO will be erected round the Oval, while a 440 yards track, 40 feet wide at the corners and 30 feet wide in the straight, will be prepared. It is stated that the proposed track will not be banked and will not encroach, upon the playing areas for football or other pastimes. There would be about twenty meetings a season, extending from November 1 to Easter.
