REMOVAL OF TREES

SIX FOR SELECTION. DECISION OF COUNCIL. Finality has yet to bo reached by the Palmerston North Borough Council on the question of the removal of certain street trees considered to constitute a menace to traffic.. The matter was brought up again at the meeting last evening, when Cr. Fitzherbert moved the following motion in accordance with notice previously given: “That all trees grooving on streets tar-sealed from kerb to kerb be surrounded bv a white kerb similar to those surrounding lamps on parking stands; that each tree be adequately lit in the street, and that the previous resolution dealing with this matter be rescinded.” Cr. Fitzherbert stated that one action had been brought against the council and another threatened. It would be an act of vandalism on the part of the council to frustrate tho efforts at beautification by those who planted tho trees. Cr. McLeod indicated his support of the motion. Cr. Mansford said that some of the trees would have to come out, although Cr. Fitzherbert expressed his objection to the removai of any. Cr. Hodgens opposed the motion, stating that the trees were a menace to public safety, and he did not see that a guard or kerb would improve conditions. Consistent with public safety, the trees should come out. Cr. Eliott stated that a concrete kerb would not protect the council in the event of an accident occurring and a claim being made. Cr. Tremaine stated that some of the trees were a distinct menace. The engineer had reported that it was not practicable to light them. He was in strict accord with the whole transit committee that the trees should be removed, as the suggested protection .was not adequate. The Mayor stated that lie was firmly convinced that public opinion was against the removal of the trees. Cr. Fitzherbert amended his motion to state merely that the previous resolution for the cutting down of the trees be rescinded. Cr. Hodgens stated that the transit committee wanted the whole of the trees taken out where the road was tar-sealed from kerb to kerb. Cr. Eliott suggested that the council take out six trees to be agreed upon and deemed to constitute a menace. Then later others could be taken out if necessary. He moved an amendment to that effect. This course of action was decided upon, the Mayor and Cr. Hodgens to inspect the trees and determine which ones should be cut. CLAIM AGAINST COUNCIL. The council was informed by its solicitors that after the expiration of one month Frederick W. Hubbard, oi College Street, intended to take action against tho council for the recovery of damages as follows: —Repairs to car. £ls fls 3d: medical expenses, 10s i: loss of use of car, £6; depreciation of car, £lO ; total, £32 Is 9d. . The claim arises out of a collision with a tree in Cuba Street.
