PRESENT-DAY TROUBLES. EFFECT OF FEDERATION. GOVERNMENT INDIGNANT. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received May 17, 11.45 a.m. HOBART, May 17. The Government and citizens are indignant at the evidence recently given by the Commonwealth Statistician before the Public Accounts Committee, to the effect that Tasmania is down at tho heels and is unable as a separate State to support herself and, therefore, should be tacked on to Victoria. Tasmanians are collecting information regarding their liabilities to the Federal Government and their disabilities under the Federation, with the object of making out a 6 ase for peaceful detachment from the 'Commonwealth. The Premier, Hon. J. C. McPhee, declares that the majority of Tasmania’s troubles are due to the navigation laws, being bound by Federal awards, and being compelled to keep in step with legislation designed to meet the needs of larger States.
