Probables football match at the Showgrounds on Wednesday, 2ZF increased its output to approximately 150 watts, __ three times its normal rating. ZL2AX, on 82 metros, employed about 50 watts, the usual power of the 285 metros transmitter. Mr W. A. Waters, president of the Radio Club informed “Microphone” that the station should havo provided daylight loudspeaker strength as far south as Dunedin, while it should havo “roared in” at Blenheim. 2ZF SERVICE. The Manawatu Radio Club hopes to broadcast a number of items by entrants in the competitions. This broadcast may take place during the musical session from seven till nine o’clock on Sunday night. PALMERSTON NORTH HAS A WAVELENGTHI No doubt this statement sounds ridiculous, but it is explained in this manner. Every town in which a broadcasting station is operating" is assigned a wave-length. Every transmitter in that town must use the same wave. Thus tho new Wanganui station, 2ZR, uses tho frequency employed by 2Zlv of tho same city. If another station were to commence in Palmerston North, it would have to use tho eamo wave-length as that assigned to 2ZF, 285 metres. Dunedin affords another example, a number of “B” class stations employing a common wave-length. DEALING WITH DISTORTION. Distortion due to overloading of valves is often experienced by listeners in the courso of local reception. “Microphone” experienced trouble in tho bass notes of certain records broadcast from 2ZF. A 415 valve with an amplification factor of 15 was removed from tho detector socket and a 409 amplification factor 9 was inserted in its place. Immediately tho reception was clarified, although the strength was a little weaker. On long distance reception this valve required replacing by the A 415 to bring the volume up to the usual standard. It would be a good plan for listeners troubled by this form of distortion to keep a valve with a low amplification factor for the detector when on “local” work.
