(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, May 13. . At a meeting of tho Foxton Rugby Football Club Mr C. Procter presided. Correspondence aybs received from tho ManaAvatu Council asking for nominations for tho seven-asido tournament to be held on June 3, but it Avas decided to defer the mattor in tho meantime with a vievv to obtaining one or two teams to enter tho competition. It was decided to instruct tho local delegates to tho union to endeavour to have tho curtain-raiser for the Horo-whonua-Manawatu match Foxton juniors v. Koputaroa, and such gamo to count in tho competition. Votes of sympathy were acoorded A. Stevenson and R. Guy in the injuries they sustained last week. At tho annual mooting of All Saints’ choir the secretary submitted tho balancesheet, Avhich shoAvcd that tho receipts for tho year totalled £ls Is 3d. Tho expenditure amounted to £l3 2s 6d, leaving a credit balance of £1 186 9d. The following were welcomed as new members: Messrs F. Caplo, W. Symons, C. Carmont and Misses F. McGee, M. Symons and H. Thynne. Tho vicar mentioned that the attendance at the services had been well maintained, the average being 15 at morning services and 19 at evening services. Tho total strength of the choir now stood at 34. Mrs C. H. Symons, Aliases R. King, N. Spring, F. McGco and Mr W. Harris vvere elected to arrange for fortnightly socials. Misa Jean Francis was reappointed hon. secretary and treasurer. The monthly meeting of tho Presbyterian Ladies’ Social Guild was held at tho home of Mr Garbett, Purcell Street. Tayo original and novel competitions caused much interest, and were won by Mesdames Heath and AlcEiven respectively. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the hostess (Mrs Garbett). Constable J. V. Bell has received notice of his transfor to Dannevirko and will leave Foxton within a day or so. Constable Lincoln, of Wellington, has been transferred to Foxton. The friends of Mr J. Westwood, of Purcell Street, Avill regret to learn that ho is at present; an inmate of the Palmerston North Hospital. The frienda of Mr A. (“Boy”) Stevenson, who entered tho Palmerston North Hospital last Wednesday with a fractured jnw, Avill bo pleased to learn that he is making good progress towards recovery, although it will bo some time before he will be able to return to Foxton. Mr F. Carmont, of Johnston Sheet, is still an inmate of the Palmerston North Hospital, but is reported to be progressing satisfactorily. THE HOSPITAL LEVY.

The estimates for the ensuing year .n connection with the Palmerston North Hospital Board were placed before councillors at Monday night’s Borough Council meeting. Cr Lucinsky remarked that the rate was getting heavier each year, but the clerk said that it Avas only £2 or £3 more this year than last. The Mayor said that Foxton cost the board a good deal. Charitable aid expended in Foxton compared more than favourably with some other places. Cr Rooro: We get - more than our proportion. Tho communication Avas received without further comment. Speaking in connection with .the Foxton Harbour Board at Monday night’s meeting of the Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr Perreau) said that it had been suggested on several occasions that the whurf be shifted to Rush Flat and the reason why this suggestion had not been taken up by the board Avas that it Avas impossible to say at present Avhat was going to happen in regard to tho proposed river cuts. 1 MAGISTRATE’S COURT. May 16. An interesting decision Avas given in tho Foxton Magistrate’s Court yesterday by Mr J. L Stout, S.M., when Percy Hubert ton, was' charged by the police with perHickey, licensee of ihe Family Hotel, i< oxmilting drunkenness on his licensed premises on April Bth and 9th. After hearing the evidence the Magistrate said that a boarder Avas entitled to be in the hotel, and tho police would have to prove that a men got drink on the premises. It could not bo inferred thut they obtained the drink in the hotel where tney Avero found. J.hey may have got it in another hotel and returned to the hotel drunk. Before a conA'iction could be recorded it would have to be proved Avhere the men obtained the drink. Evidence to the effect that a lodger was drunk was not sufficient to convict on. The Magistrate quoted decisions of Mr Justice Williams, who held that Avhere a boarder came to his hotel drunk the licensee was not linole, and tho ruling of Mr Justice Chapman to tho effect that where boarders were found drunk in an hotel it had to be proved where they obtained the drink before a conviction could be made. As thero ayes insufficient evidence in th epresent instance, the case would bo dismissed. D. S. Robinson, apiary inspector, proceeded against Frederick Yanko for a breach ot tho Apiaries Act, in that bo kept bees in other than frame hives. Yanko was also charged ivitli keeping unregistered bees. Yanko said that tlie bees Avere on the property when be bought it. He received no notice to destroy them, and, thinking ,tbpy .wore doing the country good, left them there. Tho inspector tendered evidence as to having located the bees, and having .destroyed them. No application had been made by Yanko for registration of tho bees. The Magistrate said it ivas Yanko’s duty to have attended to the bees,' as be was tho property owner. He ivas convicted and fined £l, ivith costs 10s on each charge. J. O’Connor, ot Glen Oroua, ivas charged by Mr D. R. Barron (Manawatu Rabbit Board's inspector) with failing to destroy rabbits on his property. . Mr Barron tendered evidence as to having sent out tho statutory notices to defendant, and detailed the inspection made of the property. A little ivork ivas dono on one occasion, but ivas not carried on. A joint inspection of tho property had subsequently showed it to be in a bad state, and legel steps were taken. Since then the ivork had ben carried out. Defendant bad been in ill-heaith, and a heavy penalty was not sought. Defendant was convicted and lined 2, with costs 12s.

W. Berry (Manawatu County Council traffic inspector) proceeded against J. Broadfoot for driving a motor lorry at Rangiotu on April 7ih bearing indication discs licensing the vehicle for a period which had expired. Defendant ivas convicted and fined £1 witii costs 15s. W. Aldridge was fined 5s with costs .10s for riding a bicycle in Johnston Street after sunset ivithout a light. Charged by the Manawatu traffic inspector (Mr W. Berry) with allow’ing .13 cows and ono bull to bo at largo on tho Foxton-Shannon Road, W. Smith ivas fined 10s ivith costa 17s. Judgment was given for plaintiff in the following civil undefended cases:—lT. Osborne v. S. J. Hartley, claim £7 9s lOd, costs £2 2s 6d; same v. P. Coley, £7 9s 6d, costs £1 6s 6d; same v. J. Rossitcr, £5 4s, costs £1 10s 6d; S. Matfar v. 11. Williams, £1 ,10s sd, costs 10s; C. K. Woodroofc v. H. Holden, £7 2s lOd, costs £1 12s 6d. NOTES. There was an attendance in the vicinity of eighty people at tho Foxton Surf and Life having Cub’s eueliro tournament, l'lay resulted:—Radios: Mrs S. E. Cowley 1, All's W. Broad 2; men, Mr McAllister 1, Air Devonshire 2. Aggregate:—Alias Easton and Alls Broad tied lor tho ladies’ section and Mr AlcAllister annexed tho trophy in the men’s section. Tho friends of Mrs B. Walls, who recently underwent a serious operation in the Palmerston North Hospital will bo pleased to learn that she is now making progress towards recovery. The death took place in tho Palmerston North Hospital on Wednesday morning of Afr William Alould, aged 76 years. Deceased had been in the employ of Air Carmont for the past eighteen months, and prior to that resided in the Johnsonvillc district. The filial bowling games of tho season were played on tho. local green on Wednesday afternoon, when a pairs tournament was held. Tho iviimors ivero Parkin and Walton (skip).
