WANGANUI RACES.

PONJOLA WINS STEEPLECHASE. CENTURY HURDLES TO AURORA BOREALIS. BRIGHT GLOW SCORES ON FLAT. The jumping season was advanced a further stage at Wanganui, yesterday, when the winter meeting of the Wanganui.. Jockey Club was opened in the presence of a large crowd! A high standard of jumping was revealed and an excellent day’s sport resulted, although the racing was not without its surprises. Largely due so the fact that it was an eight race programme, the club enjoyed increased totalisator returns, the sum of £22,569 10s being as compared with £20,778 10s last year—an increase of £1791.

CLEAN FENCING. Although the Wanganui country is not considered difficult, the standard of jumping throughout the day was of quite a high order, not ono fall being recorded over the big fences, whilo in the hack hurdles tho ono mishap was through Royal Acre failing to see his fence —the first —in a closely grouped field. At Hawera Tonjola had given evidenco that ho wus something out of the ordinary and the manner in which ho led the field homo in tho Wanganui Steeplechase indicates that still greater things are before him. Matu, the runner-up, was a little unlucky at one of his fences, but he came again to attend the winner home. In the hack steeplechase, Awapuni furnished two promising performers in Red Bank and Hyincstrason, both of whom are novices at tho game, and they fdlcd first and second places at tho finish. In tho Century Hurdles the consistent and game little Day Cornet mare, Aurora Borealis, registered an excellent performance when she won comfortably from Perle do Leon and Elicit with Mister Gamp just outside the money. Both Perle do Leon and Mister Gamp promise to improve by tho racing. On the flat, Bright Glow won tho Connolly Hanjicap by the narrowest of margins from High Falutin’ and Admiral Drake, while in the open sprint the little fancied Equitant got home from Royal Parade ami Melissa. BLUE PAPER SCORES. A baker’s dozen was presented in the First Purua Hack Handicap and the public selected Portray (£419) as their favourite, in preference to Latakia (£310) and Werata (£259), but tho favourite was beaten into fifth place after having had every chance. Portray began smartly to lead Bluo Paper, Werata, Coon Song and Paiko out of the barrier, Gucress having been badly left, while Tahoma and Brilliant Light began slowly. Crossing tho top Blue Paper was clear of Portray and Coon Song with Latakia, Mangaharei and Werata at intervals. They camo into the straight in that order and at tho distance Portray, Latakia and Werata were closing up on Blue Paper, Coon Song commencing to weaken. Blue Paper appeared to be beaten, but she hung on to hold Latakia off by half a length with Worata a neck back. Coon Song and Portray were on terms, with Brilliant Light, Paiko, Grand Jury and General Gas the order thereafter. VALSTREET WINS AGAIN. Hunting Boy (£637), Valstreet (£587) and Treasury (£533) dominated the market in- the Second Purua Hack Handicap, but of the trio Valstreet, who is undoubtedly an improved horse, was the only ono to figure in the money, although the other pair ran good races. Poppy Day missed the jump out, Valstreet and Treasury getting away smartly to lead Hunting Boy and Ben Hur along the back. Some Acre joined the latter pair at the turn and headed Hunting Boy crossing the top to attend the pacemakers into tho straight. Once in line for home, Ben Hur and Statuary came up to join in tho struggle, but Valstreet held his position to win nicely by a length from Ben Hur, who held off Auctioneer by half a length. Statuary finished fast to take fourth place with Treasury, Some Acre and Hunting Boy next, the favourite having failed to run on in the straight. AN EXCELLENT DEBUT. With Diana’s Lad, Doublo Soult and Calithe dropping out of tho Hack Steeple-

chase, there were only six candidates to go to the post, Waitaunaha (£837) being backed down to odds-on from Red Bank (£459) and Maidos (£327). Tho race proved a triumph for Awapuni, Red Bank and Hymestrason filling tho major placings, it being tho former’s debut over country. Flying Swift early took charge from Hymestrason and Red Bank with Bondower bringing up tho rear, and after negotiating tho brush double at the termination of a round Flying Swift and Hymestrason were together ahead of Red Bank and Waitaunaha. Tho quartette were well together along the back, but five furlong 3 from homo Red Bank went to tho front to lead Hymestrason and Waitaunaha across the top and into the straight, the All Red gelding went on to win comfortably by six lenglis from Hymestrason with Waitaunaha three lengths further back. There was a gap to Flying Swift and Bcndower with Maidos a long way back. TONJOLA FENCES WELL. All six contestants in the Wanganui Steeplechase completed the course and live of the number were well in the picture for the major portion of the distance, Maunga being tho exception. Whilo the Mountain Knight gelding completed tho course for tho first occasion, he tailed the field throughout and was never in firing line. Kowhatu set a merry pace on the first two rounds, the outsider of the field being some 20 lengths clear at one stage from Fonjola, Brigadier Bill, Matu and Airtight, who raced in a bunch tho whole way. At tho completion of the second round Kowhatu was stopping and Ponjola took over tho role of pacemaker, although the former went with his field for a time when tho pace quickened, Brigadier Bill, Airtight and Matu being in line. Matu made a faulty jump five furlongs from homo and the issue promised at that stage to lie between Ponjola and Brigadier Bill, but Matu came again to attend Ponjola into the straight with Airtight gathering up Brigadier Bill. The favourite had plenty in hand and he went on to beat Matu by three lengths with Airtight six lengths back. Brigadier Bill was a further eight lengths away. BEATEN ON THE POST. Tho good field of 15 candidates was presented in the Kaitoke Hack Hurdles for which Royal Acre (£340) was installed favourito from Airforce (£325) and Calithe (£308), but backers of the favourite had a short run for their money, Royal Acre going out at the first fence. Town Bird and Wyeford were in tho van from Second Thoughts, Marica, Lin Arlington and Skyrider as they passed through the straight, but going down the back Airforce improved his position and was lying third in behind Wyeford and Second Thoughts passing tho five furlong post, with Town Bird, Marica, Syrider and LinArlington next in order. Airforce drew away rounding the top and looked all over a winner as he negotiated tho flattened fence in tho straight. However, Vivo, who had been running well hack in the early stages, came with a strong finishing effort which Airforce failed to withstand, a head separating them at tho post. Two lengths back came Wyeford with Limosa and First Ruler ahead of Lin Arlington. STAYS ON WELL. Prince Lu (£748), Elicit (£582) and Aurora Borealis (£532) were tho strong faneios for the Century Hurdlos and two of them figured in tho money, tho first favourite being, howover, well beaten half a mile from home. Prince Lu and Whisogno were in front as they raced through tho straight from Glonstar, Elicit, Perle de Leon and Mister Gamp, with Aurora Borealis bringing up tho rear, and there was little change at the end of the circuit although tho two leaders had come back somewhat to tho field. Elicit went up in pursuit of Prince Lu going along the back, with Aurora Borealis also steadily improving her position, Whisogne retiring five furlongs from home. Rounding the bend Prince Lu cried enough, leaving Elicit and Aurora Borealis in the lead, and tho latter outstaj'ed her companion over the last pinch, Aurora Borealis winning by eight lengths from Perle do Leon, who gathered up Elicit just 6hort of the past, with Mister Gamp at the latter’s quarters. There was a gap to Prince Lu with Glenstar and Whisogne at intervals. A NARROW VICTORY. Bright Glow (£703) wound up a firm favourite from Cashier (£471) and Austerity (£431) for the Connolly Handicap and the favourite duly carried her backers through, although it was only by the narrowest of margins. Passing tho stands Monsogno and Flying Juliet were showing she way to Bright Glow, Austerity, Tho Swell and Cashier, but before the turn was reached Mendip had run up to Flying Juliet, tho pair leading the way from Austerity and Llyn Du, . Bright Glow, The Swell and Monsogne. Tho pacomakors gave way to Llyn Du and Bright Glow crossing the top with Austerity, Mendip and Admiral Drako in close attendance. When in line for homo Bright Glow worked to tho front and tho topweight just managed to get home by a short head from High Falutin’, who came very fast from the distance. Admiral Drake was but three-quarters of a length away with Mountain Heath ahead of Austerity, The Swell, Kawhakina and Mendip. EQUITANT WINS BOROUGH HANDICAP. Tho scratching pencil was freely in evidence in tho Borough Haandicap—the concluding event —for of the original 24 acceptors, only 15 went to the post. Royal Parade (£601) was made a firm favourite from Ridgemount (£470) and Just an Idea (£400), but a surprise was in store when Equitant hung on to beat the favourite and Melissa. Equitant and Royal Parade were the smartest to find their feet and they showed tho way to Kaihoro, Melissa, Bernera and Paleta. Royal Tractor and then Paleta ran up in the next furlong and as they crossed the top Equitant and Royal Tractor were ahead of Paleta with Royal Parade, Berncra, Melissa, Just an Idea and Moa Bird handy. Equitant was the first to straighten out, but at tho distance Royal Parade and Melissa came up in pursuit, although they were well out in the centre of the course, and, in a great finish, Equitant managed to scramble homo by a neck from Royal Parado with Melissa a head away. Laughing Prince was fourth with Just an Idea, Potoaform and Ridgemount in a bunch. THE DETAILED RUNNERS.
