FEILDING.

LEVEL CROSSING WARNINGS. (Special to “Standard.”) FEILDING, May 12. The Feilding Borough Council lias received word from the Public Works Department to the effect that the Main Highways Board has decided to co-operate with the Railway Department with a view to improving the vision and safety at level crossings which are situated on main or subsidiary highways. The following are the terms under which it is proposed tho work shall be done: (1) Where it is necessary for the improvement of the view at a crossing to remove obstructions on railway property, the Railway Department will bear the whole cost. (2) Where it is necessary to remove obstructions for the purpose of obtaining an improvement to visibility on the roadway the Highways Board will, in conjunction with the local authorities, provide the necessary cost. (3) In cases where it is necessary to take lands for tho purpose of carrying out improvements to visibility, 'he Highways Board is prepared to oeir half cost with the Railway Department. The Highways Board will negotiate with the local bodies in respect to- any contribution which it thinks should bo made by them.

In Feilding there is one crossing which lias been repeatedly proved : s a menace to public safety and that is on Kimbolton Road in the middle of the town, and, concerning it, the Public Works Department in announcing the agreement arrived at between the Highway Board and the Railway Department, makes the following report : “This crossing is on No. 52, Awa-huri-Mangaweka via Kimbolton highway. Jt is a square crossing about eight chains north of the Feilding station and situated ■ almost in the oentre of the business area of Feilding borough. There are no compulsory stop signs, but one electric warning signal is installed, also a red electric light is suspended over the crossing. The crossing comprises tho Main Trunk line and two sidings, the overall distance across all tracks being about 63 feet. The station yard extends past the crossing, and a good deal of shunting is carried out whicli holds up road traffic. Tho road traffic is heavy, as it comprises main through traffic and practically all the local traffic of the Feilding borough. Tho average ra'lwav traffic is about 30 trains per day. The road reserve is two chains in width, all of which is paved and used by traffic, also six lanes of road traffic converge at the crossing. With reasonable caro the crossing is not dangerous, but owing to density of road and railway traffic, also the width of street, it is recommended that, if possible, another electric signal be installed on the opposite side of the street. Visibility is fairly good, but can be improved by the removal of shrubs and ornamental trees on the railway property at the south side of the crossing. An overhead bridge at this crossing would hardly be feasible owing to tho width of tlie street, overall width of railway tracks, and ramp to overhead bridge ” A. AND P. ASSOCIATION. The nominations for office on the general committee of the Feilding A. and P. Association this year reveal that a ballot will be necessary to decide on the fountv members. The retiring members, Messrs. A. Campbell C. Evans, H. B. Johnston, B. McLeod, W. S. Page, D. W. Reid, E. E. Short and E. P. C. Swainson, have all been re-nominated and the new nominations are those of Messrs. M. A MacLeod, J. Milligan (Awahuri) and A. Goldfinch (ltongotea). The town members of the committee, Messrs. A. C. Buist, T. Collins, E. H. Lange, V. E. Smith, H. Smithers and X) Wnieker, have all been re-nom-inated and the number not exceeding that required, they will automatically be re-eiected. The retiring president, Mr E. Burrell, has also been returned without opposition as have likewise tho vice-presidents, Hon. J. G. Lobbe and Messrs. C. E. Taylor (Mayor), O. McElroy and A. Kidd, while Mr J. W. Bramwell, hon. treasurer, has found no contestants for his office.
