WOODVILLE

BOROUGH COUNCIL. I .(From Our Own Correspondent), f _ WOODVILLE, May 9. At tho monthly meeting of tho Woodville Borough Council there wero present: His (Worship tho Mayor (Mr 11. P. Homo) and Crs. Pickering. McCormick, Johnston, Sutton, Nicholas, Harding, Mackio and Roso. An apology for absence was received from Cr. Ruddick, and leave of absence .was granted. REPORTS. Tho foreman’s report was as follow: Motal comprising 1061 cubic yards has been carted and spread on tho following streets:—Vogel, Fox, Ormond and Atkinson Streets. Tho borough team has carted to the dump at Connop’s 86 c. yards of metal. Fox Street has been graded oil and metalled both sides for about three chains. Tho Square hedgo has boon cut and tho entrance cleaned up. Tho fenco has been repaired and fresh willows laid in tho river at tho rubbish dump. Culverts havo been put in for Mr J. McPeak and tho County House in McLean Street. Both reservoirs aro full and tho treatment works in order. Tho poundkeeper reported stock impounded for the month ending April 30, 1930, 6 hoifers. Tho sanitary inspector reported :—lnfectious disease cases, scarlet fever 2, tuberculosis 1. ESTIMATES. Tho estimates wero then taken. _ Tho (only mattor brought up for discussion was jfcho supplying of conveniences at the tennis courts. Cr. Mackie said that the council Bhould carry out the work as it was neodod. ' Tho Mayor: I believe tho Tennis Club havo funds in hand and should carry out tho work. Under tho general estimates, tho committee could not see its way clear to do tho work. Anyhow, tho mattor should havo been brought beforo tho finance committeo when it would havo received their consideration. Tho estimates for tho gasworks, cemetery, literary, water supply, and general .wore adopted. Tho gas and lighting committee’s recommendation that a street light be put in e,t tho corner of Bcvan Street and Sowry Road was agreed to. FIRE BOARD FOR WOODVILLE. Tho works and financo committee, having mado enquiries from small boroughs regarding tho cost of fire prevention under fire boards reported that they wero of tho opinion that tho timo had arrived when a firo board should bo formed in tho borough, and recommended that tho council tako tho necessary steps for tho formation of a firo board for Woodville.

Tho Mayor, in introducing the mattor, said that replies to enquiries made, had boon recioved from Pahiatua, Waipukurau and Foxton, and these bodies stated that under tho system of a fire board costs had been considerably reduced. After a certain amount of discussion in which it was stated that the board would comprise two members appointed by the council, two by tho insuranco companies, and. one by the Governor-General, . tho Mayor moved that a firo board bo appointed for Woodville. Cr. Pickering seconded tho motion which was carried unanimously. As it was found that a poll of ratepayers was necessary before a board could bo appointed, and notice of such poll must bo given at least fourteen days before it takes place, it was decided on the motion cf the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Johnston, that a poll of ratepayers bo taken on June 4. Tho town clerk (Mr Iveay) was instructed to tako tho necessary steps to arxango for tho poll. POLLUTION OF CREEK. Tho Mayor stated that he and tho town clerk had waited on the borough solicitor to discuss the matter of tho pollution of the Mangapapa Stream. Tho solicitor reported that the person who had raised the complaint was cut of the borough boundary, and thcreforo tho Borough Council were not bound. Tho Mayor: I am of tho opinion that steps should bo taken to have tho alleged nuisanco remedied. It was decided that a company be forwarded the Health Officer’s report, and infermod that they wero compelled to take action. It was also decided to ask that tho directors meet the council in conference on tho matter, prior to action being taken. GENERAL BUSINESS. Cr. Suttou asked that the water tank at tho cemetery be moved to the robing room for tho convenience of visitors. The Mayor thought tho tank was there fore the uso of monumental masons. It would bo on eyo-soro to placo it by tho robing shod. Cr. Sutton: Not such an eyo-soro as tho robing room has been for the past five years. Cr. Nicholas was of the opinion that it would be unfair to people at the upper end of tho cemetery if tho tank wore shifted It was resolved that a now tank bo placed at tho end of tho robing room. Cr. Johnston referred to tho fact that nothing had been done to two buildings which tho owners had been requested to pull down. The engineer reported that tho owner of ono building could not be traced, and that he had not heard further from the owners of the other building. Ho would write them again. Cr. Sutton stated that tho upper part of tho parking area in Ormond Street was boing used as a dumping ground for old cars. Ho moved that tho person allegedly rosponsible bo asked to removo them within 24 hours, or legal action would bo taken. Cr. Pickering seconded tho motion which was carried. INCREASE OF RATES. Tho Mayor gave of motion that at a special meeting of tho council to be held on Thursday, J une 12, ho would move a resolution that tho Woodvillo Borough Council mako and levy tho rates for tho ensuing year. The tablo shows that, although the lighting and gasworks rates would be lowered by gd and l-9d respectively, thero will bo a general increase on other rates which would mean an increase of approximately id in the £l. Tho funds would bo utilised for general •works, including the proposed tar-scaling of tho road from the Post Office to Pinfold E ° ad ' TREASURER'S REPORT. Tho treasurer reported that the receipts for the month had amounted to £l7O 8s 11a »nd tho payments to £367 15s 2d. Thero was a credit balance at tho bank, at date, of £251 18s 6d.
