LONGBURN.
(From Our Own Correspondent). LONGBURN, May 9. The Anglican Church hold its harvest festival on Thursday evening. There was a large congregation present, including a. number of visitors from Palmerston North and surrounding districts. Cannon Woodward wus tho preacher and was assisted bv Rev. P. Wiltshire. Tho church was specially decorated for tho occasion, there being a large display of fruit and vegetables which wero afterwards forwarded as a gift to the All baints Ghildien s Home. The offertory was forwarded to tho All Saints’ vestry as a donation to the building fund of tho new Children’s Home. Tho annual meeting of parishioners was hold after the service, the previous committco, with the addition of Airs Lemberg and Miss Edward es, being elected for the ensuing year. Mr T. Rowland was reelected secretary. After the annual meeting a dainty supper was served in the social room by members of the Ladies’ Guild. During tho supper adjournment Canon Woodward, on behalf of tho members of the church, presented Mr and Mrs Wiltshire with a very nice oak tea waggon and a bedroom chair as wedding n-ifts. The opportunity was also taken to welcome Mrs Wiltshire to the district, Mrs Wiltshire’s experience in church work would bo a great help to Mr Wiltshire, both spiritually and in social work in connection with the latter’s charge of tho country districts of the Palmerston North parish. Mr Wiltshire, on behalf of Mrs Wiltshire and himself, thanked the donors of the gifts and expressed deep gratitude for tho wonderful welcomes extended to them by the various organisations connected with All Saints’ Church in Palmerston North. Mr J. Stirling, of the local railway staff,
accompanied by his wife and family, has left on annual leave for Wellington and tho South Island. Miss L. S. Hills, of tho Longburn School teaching staff, is spending tho vacation with friends in Wellington. Mr and Mrs Wesley Birch have returned homo after a fortnight spent touring the North Island. A successful euchre and dance was held in tho hall on Tuesday night. The euchre prizes were won by Mrs Burns and Mrs Larsen and Messrs Learmonth and Canton. Dancing was continued till midnight. At tho monthly meeting of the Hall Committee there were present, Messrs Birch (chairman), Brockliss, Ormsby, Meehan, Palmer, and Rowland. Owing to unforeseen circumstances, Mr Palmer was unable to act as secretary during the coming yoar and Mr Brockliss undertook to ccarry out the secretarial duties. Accounts passed for payments amounted to £1 4s 6d, a considerable amount of routino business also being transacted. Mr and Mrs S. Neilsen have returned home after spending a very enjoyable holiday in Auckland. Mrs G. Syversen has gone on a holiday to Christchurch. The approach of tho end of tho dairying season is indicated by the fact of the cream lorries collecting on alternate days only.
