RONGOTEA

OROUA DRAINAGE BOARD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) . RONGOTEA, May 9. The usual monthly meeting of the Oroua Drainage Board was held on Wednesday when the following members were in attendance: Messrs J. Gloyn soar., (chairman), C. Thompson, C. 11. Davison, B. Flynn, A. Goldfinch and C. S. Hamlin. The overseer, Mr W. 11. Foster, reported that tho following drains had been completed: Artisan, Goodwin’s and Costall’s drain. Tenders for tho cleaning of tho following drains wero let: Wiillow continuation, E. l’edley; Clark and Tompkin’s, W. Leaky and W. Rout. Mr Goodwin waited on tho board to enquire if more sand could bo removed from the main drain. Mr Schreibor also waited on tho board to apply for a classification of his property. Tho overseer was authorised to sco that tho following drains wore cleaned: 25 chains north branch Willow drain and five chains of Richmond’s and Arnott’s drain. Accounts passed for payment amounted to £136 3s lOd. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

Tho usual monthly meeting of the Rongotea branch of the Women’s Institute was held in tho Masonic Hall on Tuesday afternoon, when Mrs J. Will presided over- an excellent attendance of mombers and visitors. It was decided that as the first Tuesday in Juno falls on Juno 3rd, King’s Birthday, the meeting for that mouth would be held on Wednesday, June 4th. Two new mombers, Mrs Bond and Mrs Knight, wero enrolled. During the afternoon Miss Roby, of Palmerston North, gave a most interesting address on home nursing and a roll call, “My most unpleasant household duty,’’ caused much amusement. A dainty afternoon tea was served by tho hostesses, Mr 9A. Burgess, Misses A. Burgess and J. McDonell. The singing of the National Anthem brought a most enjoyablo and instructive afternoon to a close. SOCIAL CLUB.

Tho usual weekly eucliro tournament conducted under the auspices of the Rongotea Social Club was held in tlie Masonic Hall on Thursday evening when a large number of players were in attendance. Some very interesting games wero indulged in, and at the conclusion of tho last game the following wero declared the prize winners: Gentlemen, Mr E. Maunsell; ladies, Mrs Thompson. Consolation prizes wero awarded to the following: Gentlomen, Mr J. L. McCall; ladies, Mrs Hughes. Tho partaking of a sumptuous supper brought a very pleasant evening to a close.
