MOUTOA FLOOD BANK.

ASSISTANCE OF GOVERNMENT SOUGHT. (From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, April 17. During tho course of his inspection of tho Moutoa in connection with the ManawatuOroua River Board's schemo yesterday the opportunity was taken by Mr B. G. Gower and Mr W. E. Barber to draw the attention of tho Minister of Public Works (Hon. E. A. Ransom) to the serious position Moutoa settlers were faced with in the tirosion that was taking place at Moutoa in front of Mr Tyrill’s house where the settlors’ bank was washed away in the January flood. Mr Gower mentioned that the bank had been erected by tho efforts of the settlers in tho locality when tho old county bank was washed away and that after tho bank had gono a second time last January they had again got together and were now filling the gap once more at their own expense. ,In view of the farreaching and devastating effects of tho river erosion at this point he asked that the Government assist tho settlers in their work by making somo grant or by subsidising tho work. Tho Minister said that the matter was entirely different from .the ManawatuOroua scheme in connection with which ' ho was making tho inspection, but possible he would bo able to take a note of tho application before leaving the district.
