HOUSEHOLDERS’ MEETINGS.

RANGIOTU. (From Our Own Correspondent.) RANGIOTU, April 16. Thero was a good attendance of householders at tho annual meeting of the Rangiotu School district, the retiring chairman, Mr T. Donaldson, commenting that it was tho largest attendance ho had seen at Rahgiotu for many years. Ho was therefore pleased to welcome those present and heartily thnnkod them for the interest they were taking in their school. In presenting report and balance-sheet for 1929, he stated that the past year had been a most remarkablo one inasmuch that a vast improvement to the playground had been effected at no cost whatsoever to the district or education authorities. Through ignorance of their powers his committeo had allowed the Manawatu County Council to remove spoil from the sandhill which hid the school from the main road. When considerable progress had been made with the work tho matter was reported to the Education Board. Representatives of tho board, County Council and School Committeo then conferred. The chairman of the Education Board (Mr Collins) considered that the work commenced would greatly enhance tho board’3 property. An agreement was finally, entered into between the council and the board defining what should bo done. As a result the grounds had been levelled, the unsightly hill removed and the road boundary has been rcfcnced. All this had been done at no exponso to the School Committee who initiated the work. Tho work in the school had been of a very gratifying standard and tho report showed a highly satisfactory standard of attainment which reflected great credit upon the headmaster (Mr L. J. Walker) and his 6taff. Unfortunately, owing to tho oponing of the Opiki School in 1928, our school had been reduced in grado and in consequence the infant mistress (Miss C. T. Spurdle) had been transferred at the end of the year. Miss J. Henry also had tecently received an appointment in another school, her place being filled by Miss M. D. Feist who takes up her duties on May Ist. The school had had a most successful year in tho field of sport and its successful activities in that direction wore directly due to the keen interest taken by the headmaster and staff. The committeo had the extreme satisfaction of again being able to revert to the old system of presenting each child at tho school picnic with a gift book in addition to providing them with an excellent day’s sport. Mr J, K. Hornbtow had very kindly attended to present the gift books and had congratulated tho Rangiotu pooplo upon the manner in which they had treated every child on the school roll. With the fall in the grado of the school the capitation grant, which had in the past been barely sufficient, had been greatly reduced. Tho incoming committee would need to revise funds for any improvements whatsoever. Tho ■ balance-sheet for the year ending February 28th, 1930, showed a credit of £9 6s 6d in the general account and a credit of 5s lOd in tho special account. . . Before proceeding with the formal business a mark of sympathy and respect to the relatives of the late Mr and Mrs Geo. Kendall, Mrs G. A. Wilton and Mr Manawaroa Larkins was carried in silence. In moving tho adoption of the report and balance-sheet, Mr H. Bond congratulated tho outgoing committee upon their successful year’s work, especially mentioning tho picnic end prizegiving ceremony. Mr A. A. Alsop eulogised the work of tho staff, and a motion was carried placing on record tho householders’ appreciation of the manner in which the teachers had carried out their onerous duties not only in the school itself, but upon the field of spoft. The meeting then proceeded with the election of the committte for the ensuing year. The following were the successful condidates: Messrs T. C. Donaldson, 11. H. Simmons, E. L. Russell, R. Carkeck and J. A'. Shaw. The committee appointed Mr T. C. Donaldson as chairman and Mr L. J. Walker as secretary and treasurer. FOXTON SCHOOL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, April 16. At tho annual meeting of householders at Foxton Mr J. K. Hornblow presided over a small attendance. Tho balancesheet to tho, end of February, 1930, showed a credit in tho general account of £2l 11s and in the special account of £47 18s lid. On tho motion of Mr Smith, it was

decided to forward a letter of commendation I to tho headmaster and staff. _ Tho head-1 master’s wholehearted interest in tho wcjfaro of t*'e children educationally, physically and morally was an inspiration to all, said Mr Smith. Ho doubted whether parents realised the valuo of such a man and staff and if tho children did not get on in lifo, tho fault would not be with their school life, A special vote of thanks was passed to tho hon. secretary, Mr Roore, and to tho chairman. , , As tho nominations of candidates for tho committeo woro only sufficient to fill the vacancies they wore declared elected' as follow:—Messrs J. K. Hornblow, M. E. Porreau, R. Rangiheuea, Jno. Ross, G. F. Smith, R. Mayor, C. M. Hcwctt, I. Mudford, Fredk. Robinson. . (From Our Own Correspondent.) GLEN OROUA, April 15. More than usual interest was evinced in the householders’ meeting and parents were present from various parts of tho school district. Mr J. Howe was elected to tho chair and called upon the retiring secretary, Mr W. Wallace, to read tho report of tho last annual meeting, the minutes of which wero confirmed. The annual report and balance-sheet wero then read, the opinion of the meeting being that the report was more comprehensive, and one that was an example for future committees to follow. Pleasure was expressed at the very good work carried out by the retiring committee and tho teachers of tho school. A special voto of thanks was accorded tho committee and the teachers, the latter being specially eulogised for their painstaking work in school, and the interest in outside activities such os swimming, hockey, etc. A discussion took place regarding “summertime.” A vote was taken as to whether it be> a recommendation to tho incoming committteo that “summertime” be not observed in connection with the working of tho school. A majority voted in favour of working to summertime, the recommendation being negatived. A recommendation that the incoming committeo endeavour to improve the condition of the paddock for pupils’ horses was carried. The election of a committee for the ensuing year was then proceeded with, seven nominations being received. Messrs W. A. Boswell, W. Wallace, P. Farland, W. B. Croad and J. Wheeler were elected, the first three being members of the old committee. Mr J. Howl, who had been a member of the committee for the past nine years, did not seek re-election. A vote of thanks by acclamation was accorded Mr Howl, Mr W. Scott voicing the opinion of tho meeting when he stated that Mr Howl was a gentleman who had worked hard and unselfishly during the whole period of time ho had 6pent as a committeeman and that the work he had done was a splendid monument to his connection with the school. Mr Howl stated that what he had dono for the school he did not begrudge and ho was proud of the fact that he had been present at every meeting during the time he was a committeo member; Though he had not sought re-election, he was willing to give his assistance towards anything that would benefit the school in future. At a subsequent meeting of tho new committee Mr W. A. Boswell was elected chairman and Mr W. Wallace was re-elected secretary. Tho head teacher was authorised to order two cords of firewood, and to obtain two pencil sharpeners to replace the old ones.
