The congregation of the First Presbyterian Church at Dunedin unanimously decided to extend a call to Rev. IV. Allan Stevely, of East St. Hilda, Melbourne. At the monthly meeting of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon a welcome was extended to Mr A. Shelton, who was recently appointed postmaster at Palmerston North. A cable message from Sydney announces the death of Sir Thomas Hughes, a well-known figure in legal and commercail circles, a former Lord Mayor of Sydney, and a member of the Legislative. Council. Sir Thomas was aged 67. . , Mr L. B. Dawson, who recently underwent an operation in a private hospital in Palmerston North, returned to Levin on Monday. He has been making satisfactory progress, but it_will be necessary for him to return, to Palmerston North after Easter for the purposes of an X-ray examination. Rev. Dr. J. T. Pinfold, secretary of the Wellington Ministers’ Association, will leave Wellington on May 26 by the Rangitiki for a visit to England, Ireland and the Continent. He will be away for about six months. While in London he hopes to publish a book recording his experiences during fifty years in New Zealand. The high esteem in which the late Right Rev. Monsignor McKenna was held by all sections of the public was shown by the large and representative attendance of mourners from all parts of the Wairarapa and surrounding districts at his interment at the Masterton cemetery yesterday. Clergy from the Mastertoii and adjacent parishes were present, including Archbishop Redwood, Archbishop O'Shea and Dr. Kennedy. Solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church at 10 o’clock, the celebrant being Rev. John Kelly; deacon, Rev. Father Dugan; sub-deacon, Rev. Father Geanev; and the master of ceremonies, ltev. Father-Evans. Archbishop Redwood and Archbishop O’Shea were in the sanctuary.
