LIFE IN SOLOMONS.
ILLUSTRATIVE LECTURE.' Last evening at St. Paul’s, Broadway Avenue, Rev. A. H.'Voyce, who is on furlough from the island of Bougainville in the Solomon group, gave an interesting lecture illustrated by beautifully tinted lantern slides. Prior to screening these slides, Mr Voyco, who ■is Methodist missionary on the island, delivered a. descriptive talk concerning the people and theit customs, dealing with their legends and stories in which they have great belief. Mr Voyce mentioned that there are a number of totally different languages spoken by different tribes on the same island, while there are many dialects of each language. This meant increased work for the missionaries, and the Scriptures had to be translated into divers tongues. The speaker touched on the “pidgin English” spoken in th© group, giving examples of the phrases employed. Mr Voyco also displayed a number of native curios, including mammoth shells, ■and brightly-coloured butterflies of a size nob seen outside the tropics. The slides shown by Mr Voyce are from pictures taken by him during his term at Bougainville prior to having his holiday. .
