PROPOSED AIRPORT BOARD
CONFERENCE BEING CALLED
Steps are shortly to be taken to call a conference in Palmerston North with the view to establishing an airport board to assume similar functions to the organisation already in existence at Wanganui. The matter was brought up at the monthly meeting of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon by the chairman (Mr M. H.. Oram). He stated that legislation had recently been enacted enabling local bodies to contribute towards the formation of airport boards. He was keenly interested in the matter, and he sought the authority of the chamber to call a conference of representatives of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce, Borough Council, Kairanga County Council, Feilding Borough Council and Oroua County Council with the object of forming an airport board to purchase and control a suitable area of land for an aerodrome. Spread over all tho local bodies concerned, said Mr Oram, the cost would not be heavy, while considerable revenue should accrue to an airport board from the operations of commercial services. Furthermore, he d.d not think that heavy cost would be involved in the acquisition of the site in view because the owner would lease it back at a good figure. ■ The chamber agreed that the chairman should call the conference. “It cannot do any harm,” commented Mr Oram. “I hope to havo it done and to report to the next meeting of the chamber.”
