FIREWORKS DISPLAY.

IN AID OF PIPE BAND. Though the financial result was not as satisfactory as was hoped, the fireworks display, in aid of the Pipe Band’s kilt fund, held last evening, proved most enjoyable. The Garrison Band and the Pipe Band paraded at the Post Office and marched thence to the Showgrounds where a brief programme was rendered. : The . boys? singing;, --competition tfas then held with the fblfowing results: Murdoch Campbell (“Daddy”) 1, Reg. Armstrong (“Drink to me Only”) 2; G. Hunt (“Lackada,y”) and A. R. Tucker (“Believe me Uf All Those Endearing Young. Chaims”) equal 3. Eric Corry (“Little Blue Diamonds”) and John' • Hunt (“Spreading the "News”) also- - competed and were awarded'consolation prizes. "The performance of 'the winner was a very good one. . The next event was a spectacular one. The Pipe Band paraded in the Oval by torchlight. This concluded the earlier part .of the programme'and the fireworks then commenced. As is the modern- tendency the brilliance of the spectacle was emphasised in preference to noise, and some very fine set pieces were-seen. A waterfall called forth the applause of those present, while a topical note was struck by a fiery “Scots Wha Hae.” There was also a large Saxon set with a spinning double diamond. There lyere beautiful revolving fountains, scattering coloured fire, and brilliant star shells, illuminating the Showgtound as if it were day. There were batteries of Roman candlep and Catherine wheels. And there were the high skyrockets, dear to the heart of children, "who were present in large numbers. In fact, all the variety of fireworks followed one another with such rapidity that the time allotted to the display seemed all too short. Unfortunately,-,the proximity of tho Garrison Band’s display somewhat impaired the attendance which was only fair.
