There was a very gratifying attendance at the annual meeting of the Alangaweka branch of tho Plunket Society, more than 60 ladies being present. Airs M. Graham presided. Miss Lucy Cook, of Marton, gave an interesting address on Plunket Society work in England. Mcsdamee Sweet and R. H. Guthrio wore appointed delegates to tho annual conference at Wellington, and Alesdames Guthrie and Pairman are the delegates to the annual meeting of the Taihape branch. Tho membership of the Alanagwoka body is 80. Officers elected for the ensuing year are; Vice-presidents, Mesdames Roach, J. Graham, AI. Graham, J. Glenn, H. C. Wilson, J. Guthrie, J. Pairman; secretary and treasurer, Mre Guthrie. At tho weekly shoot of tho Alangaonoho Rifle Club, C. Plummer led with a score of 69. C. Stephenson, J. Healey, K. G. i Dalzioll and W. James each scored 68. After four shoots off, C. Stephenson won Mr F. Paget’s trophy. K. G. Dalziel won Tho Hunterville Football Club held a dance on Friday for tho purpose of augmenting its funds and the function proved to bo very successful. Messrs W. Hayward, I. Molntyre and G. Shanley were Al.C.’s. Rev. M. R. Heidrich, pastor of the Lutheran Church at Alarton, attended a conference connected with tno church at Halcombe last week and delivered an address. Tho first euchro party of the season under the auspices of St. Francis’s Church was largely attended. Prizes went to Airs R. Wood and Airs Hart, consolation awards going to Airs Irwin and Miss Baker. Devotees of tho game of golf were forward in large numbers when tho official opening of the Marton Club’s season took p\oco on Saturday afternoon. A mixed foursomes competition was • won by Mrs K. Glasgow and 11. Collier with a score of 90—12—78. Miss Baldwin and A. Ful-lerton-Smith had a card of 87—5—82, and Aliss E. Smith and Oponshaw had 97—15 82. A ladies’ putting competition was won by Mrs G. Bevan and a men's contest by R. McKenzie. Tho Loyal Marton Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., met on Friday when Sister AI. Thomson occupied the chair in tho absence owing to sickness of Bro. Windleburn, V.G. In addition to business of a routine nature, arrangements were mado for the holding of a debate on the subject “That it is better fdr women to engage in domestio pursuits than commercial work.” Tho Rangitira Golf Club (Huntervilje) also opened its season on Saturday, Air Alton Rhodes presiding. Air James Bull officially openod the links after which a Canadian foursomes competition was hold. Mrs E. W. Donovan won a putting competition and Mrs ' Butler (Rotorua) an approaching and putting contest. A “gift tea” in honour of Miss A. Long, of Hunterville, was held in tho Anglican schoolroom on Friday, when numerous presents were given to tho ropsective bride. A competition was won by Miss Winifred Mair. At tho residence of Mr and Airs Evan AlcGregor, Turakina Valley, a “kitchen tea” was given for Miss Hope Cunningham©, who is shortly to be married. Miss Cunningham received many useful presents. The Marton branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association has completed arrangements for the holding of Poppy Day here on Saturday next. The flowers will also be on sale in Hunteryille and Bulls.
