RACING NEWS.

TOPICS FROM THE TRACK. PREPARATIONS FOR EASTER. (By “Binocular.”) Beautiful conditions were offering at Awapuni yesterday morning for training operations and, with the majority of those who aro fully wound up engaged' at the Easter meetings, matters were interesting. A touch of frost left the plough a shade heavy, but it was freely used by the candidates exercising. j This centre supplies 20 entries 'for the opening day at Feilding, while seven will bo found at Tauherenikau, three at Waipukurau, two at Ellerslio and one at Riccarton. The trio going furthest afield aro Elicit and Red Fuchsia, who will contest the jumping events at the Auckland fixture, while Merry Damon will take his place in the Great Easter at tho C.J.G. meeting. Elicit and Red Fuchsia have already left for the sceno of action, but prior to their departure they wore jumped. In'company with Democratic, Red Fuchsia was sent over the big fences, but he encountered disaster for, screwing at the first of the brush double, he unshipped his pilot, Alan Me-. Donald, with -the result that the horseman received facial abrasions and slight concussion. Tho mishap is not, however, expected to prevent the horseman being on top on the day. , Elicit is very well and he should give a good account of himself, but it remains to be seen how Red Fuchsia will take to the Ellerslie country on this occasion.

Rouex and First Ruler are the sole local horses figuring in the Kawa Kawa Hack Hurdles at Feilding. Rouex ran a first and a third at Hawke’s Bay, and, although he moved somewhat scratchily in his light task yesterday morning, it was evident that such disappears as he becomes warmed up. First Ruler also figures in the Taonui Hack Handicap—a seven furlong event —at Feilding and which she will prefer is meantime undetermined. A lazy worker, the Chief Ruler mare declined to go with The Masher in a mile gallop on the plough yesterday morning, being well back at the'close. The Masher drew away over the last three furlongs to complete his task in 1.51. He will contest the hack mile and a distance event at Feilding. With G. W. New on a trip to Australia, C. Norgrove is superintending the training operations for this stable, but the inmates will not be called on to any extent during the Easter period. Norgrove will go south with Merry Damon on Friday night, while Merry Melody will be taken through to Feilding. The former, while beaten by a fellow local performer in Pahu in the Tamatete Handicap on the second day at Awapuni, recorded an excellent performance in getting up into second place after being hadly placed at the turn for home, and the southern mission should npt be fruitless. As A. G. Murray has accompanied his former employer to Australia—the land of his birth—Merry Damon will not have his usual pilot on this occasion, but with .T. Green in the saddle he should not suffer in this respect, it is not unlikely that Murray will settle in or around Melbourne.

Hunting Boy, Glenrossie and Winlock are three Awapuni candidates in the Ongo Hack Handicap at Feilding. Of the trio, Winlock was the only one not asked to gallop yesterday morning. Glenrossie (K. Voitre) had Keddar (T. Metcalf), who claims an engagement in the Halcombe Handicap at the same fixture, as a companion over six furlongs 'on the plough. Despite having -.the outside running, Glenrossie was going quite as well as his companion at the close, the full distance being run in 1.21 2-5 and the last five furlongs in 1. 7 2-5. Keddar appeared to be a, shade sore and did not work very freely in consequence. Hunting Boy (K. Voitre), who is being steadily brought up to racing pitch following upon a 6pcll, was partnered by Callanmore (McDowell) over five furlongs on the course proper, the last half mile being left behind in 53 2-5. There was little between them at the close.

Pahu (T. Metcalf), who is Awapuni’s one representative in the Manchester Gold Cup at Feilding, was sent along over a mile on the course proper in oompany with Brilliant Light (K. Voitre). The pair kept together throughout, Brilliant Light surprising by the manner in which he hung on at the business end of things to be on terms at the close in 1.52. As the flags were some 60ft 'out from the rails- in places, they ran considerably - over the mile. Brilliant Light .will be-a runner in ' the Taonui Hack Handicap at Feilding in which Potoaform, Desert Lad, Hymestrason, First Ruler and Callamart are other local horses .included. Tho first named trio head the weights,' Potoaform being actual topweight with 9.0., Brilliant Light and Desert Lad following at 31bs and 51be intervals. Potoaform (C. Broughton) jumped off ahead of Airforce (Sheprman) at the six furlong post to bear out on to the sand track. Straightened up again, ho ran home from the five furlong post in 1.8., being still clear of Airforce. The latter will make the trip to the Waipukurau meeting where ho reads reasonably well placed in the Purimu Hack Handicap.

Trainer R. E. Hatch will have tho majority of his string at Tauherenikau, but Hymestrason will proceed to Feilding and Coon Song to Waipukurau. Yesterday morning Hymestrason (W. Broughton) and Rioghail (Metcalf) were well clear cf Myola (K. Voitre) at the end of a six furlong gallop on the plough which was accomplished in 1.24. Callanmore will accompany Rioghail and Myola to tho Wairarapa fixture.

Llyn Du, who figures in tho Onepuhi Hack Handicap at Feilding, was sent over six furlongs on the plough, unaccompanied, •ud the Kilbroney gelding got to the end of his task in promising fashion in 1.22., the last five furlongs being left behind in 1.8. He does not, however, appear to have recovered his earlier form as yet. Kilorell, who also figures in tho same event, was given strong work by his trainer prior to speeding up over the last three furlongs.

Four Aces (K. Voitre) will return to flat racing at Feilding where he will contest the Maiden Stakes. ' Yesterday morning he and Callamart (Metcalf) went out to gallop six furlongs on the plough,' but the latter, who is a very, erratic track worker.' declined to gallop and Four Aces drewright away to complete his task in 1.24. Sporting Chance - (W. Broughton), who will make the trip to the Wairarapa meeting, slipped over five furlongs on. the course, proper in 1.6 j., the youngster moving attractively. W. Bailey also sent Lackham (W. Bcfl) and Rule Britannia (J. Nicolson) along on the same track from the five furlong pest. They jumped away badly and, timod from the four futlong post, ran home

in 55sec., Lackham having his head in front at the post. Rule Britannia will ‘contest the five furlong event at Waipukurau. E. W. Watson will take Dobbin and Patearoa through to the Wairarapa fixture, but he is meantime experiencing trouble in respect to riders—a not uncommon difficulty at this period of the year. The pair were galloped in company over five furlongs on the plough, running the distance in 1.6$ both finishing well. GENERAL. T. Green and T. Metcalf will ride for a portion of the programme at Feilding prior to motoring through to catch the i forry steamer. The former will ride Four i Aces, and Hunting Boy at Feilding and | Merry Damon, Great Charter, Courtesy, | Jaloux, Swiftray, Pride and pzone at Riccnrlon. T. Metcalf will pilot Spearwood, Briar Root, Potoaform and probably Winlock at Feilding and Don Jose, Silver Coot, Pink Paper, Greenaway and The Viscount or The Bailiff in the Autumn Plate Riccarton.

K. Voitre, who has made a quick return to form after his compulsory spell from the saddlo through injury, will ride Callanmore, Lackham, Sporting Chance, Rioghail and Myola at Tauherenikau. W. Broughton has been engaged for Pahu, Glenrossie and Hymestrason on the opening day at Feilding, while Alister McDonald will again pilot Rouex, and C. Goulsbro’ Kilorell. Should P. Burgess be available,'he will'ride First Ruler. There promises to be a general shortage of jockeys during the Easter and quite a numbc: of local candidates are still without pilots. . Moutoa- Treasury, who has built up in condition considerably, is again a daily attender at the tracks and the Paper Money mare may be found in action at either Wanganui or Otaki. ~ . Mister Gamp, who met with an injury to his leg when he fell with A. H. Hobson on the eve of the Manaawtu meeting, is being restricted to trotting exercise meantime. The Arrowsmith gelding Arrowhead, who had to be treated to a lengthy spell, is again in tho active ranks, but his tasks .continue to be comparatively light ones. Blue Paper is now commencing to be speeded up in her work. Mrs McDonald will take over two of Mr A. Symes’s youngsters immediately after Easter. The full-brother to Princess Betty is reported to be a very promising sort. Princess Betty, who was sold to an Australian sportsman by G. W. New, won £BBS for her owner-trainer during her brief racing period. R. E. Hatch has received a raking three-year-old by Lord Quex from Bon Espoir. The latter was a daughter of Ringdove by Coniform and thus claims relationship with Paganclli. The name of Braggart has been accorded the new arrival, but his preparation has been somewhat delayed as the result of his experiencing a rough train journey through from Hastings.
