FEILDING
CIVIC CLUB. (Special to ‘“Standard.”) FEILDING, April 16. The annual meeting of the Feilding Civic Club was held yesterday ffternoon, Mr J. S. Tingey presiding. Tho annual report was adopted as follows: —As the club has confined itsblf to luncheons during the past year, there is nothing of an exciting nature to report. At the annual meeting last year we had the pleasure not for the first time, of hearing an excellent address by Mr W. A. Waters, of Palmerston North, on radio. At the June luncheon, for the first time in our history, the guest and speaker was a lady, Mis 3 Dalton, an English visitor associated with the Girl Guide movement. Following this, Mr W. E. Carthow spoke on our sidereal system. In Juno we had the pleasure of entertaining Mr E. Fair, retiring Mayor, and expressing our appreciation of his work as the borough’s Chief Magistrate for two years. Canon Petrie addressed tho club in July on Norfolk Island and Melanesia. Mr M. .Bethuno followed ot tho noxt meeting with a statistical and descriptive address on tho Falkland Islands, and in the same month Mr L. J. Wild spoke on his American tour. Mr H. Tolley, was the speaker, likewise on his travels abroad, in August, arid in September Rev. F. Copeland gave the second of his addresses on Samoa. Dr. Allan in September spoke on old and new spelling. Last month, the club was associated with tho Chamber of Commerce and the Cricket Association in a farewell to Mr A. E. Sandford. During the year we received an invitation from the headmaster of the Agricultural High School to -arrange for a number of members of the club to speak to ■ tho pupils, of tho school on public questions. The Invitation was accepted and Messrs W. E. Carthew, J. S. Tingey, N. C. Harding, and G. J. Fitzpatrick each addressed tho school. The attendances at tho luncheons have not been very satisfactory. We would suggest to members (hat it would be a great help to the officers, and ono which we think they are entitled to expect, if members made a point of attending every luncheon, whether the particular subject, or the chosen speaker, appeals to them or not. We began the year with a debit balance of 19s sd. Subscriptions paid during the year amounted to £3 12s 6d, and the expenses totalled £4 2s sd, so that there remains a debit balance of 9s lid. Officers elected for tho ensuing year were: President. Mr N. C. Harding; vice-president, Mr C. S. Jeffs; committed, Messrs J. S. Tingey, T. K. Hay, W. E. Carthew, T. S. Goldsmith and G. J. Fitzpat.rick. It was resolved to hold a luncheon every three weeks and a direction wai given to tho committee to draw up a. programme, specifying the speakers and this subjects. As the business of the annual meeting occupied the whole of the luncheon hour, the proposal to discuss improvements in Feilding was deferred for a future meeting. CARD TOURNAMENT. A card tournament was organised by the Feilding Foresters' Lodge to assist one of its members whose home was destroyed by fire a few weeks ago, and who was himself severely burned. The first prize, for the ladies was won by Mrs Brown and 'the second by Mrs Pearson. Mr Isaacs secured the points prize.
