NATIVE BIRD LIFE.
KAPITI ISLAND CONDITIONS. WELLINGTON, April 14. A grant of £IOO to improve the conditions for native bird life onNßapiti Island was made by the Wellington Acclimatisation Society on Friday. The chairman, Mr L. 0. H. Tripp, stated that he had seen Mr Macintosh, Commissioner of Crown Lands, when the idea had first been mooted, as to the best way of spending money on improving the conditions for native bird life on the island. Mr Macintosh replied that ho had discussed the question with tho caretaker, Mr Wilkinson, and they had agreed that any grant which might le made would be spent to the best advantage in the planting of suitable species of native trees and shrubs on the open grass area of the island. Ip this woy the bird food on the island would be much improved. Tho greater part of any expenditure would be in the employment of extra labour to assist Mr Wilkinson.
Mr Tripp said that he liid since seen Mr Wilkinson, who was not only an authority on the native birds, but also on the native plants. It was decided to give £IOO for the purpose and allow Mr Wilkinson to spend as he thought.fit.
