HIGHWAYS FUNDS.
WELLINGTON, April 14. Questioning whether the individual motorist really appreciated what had been accomplished in defeating an attempted raid on the highways board funds, the chairman of the North Island Motor Union, Mr W. O’Callaghan, at the half-yearly meeting yesterday, made a brief statement on the subject. He said that a delegation had waited upon the Prime Minister, who gave no final decision at that time, but further efforts resulted in a complete withdraw! from the intended raid on the highways funds. No interest would he charged on the £200,000 made available annually from the Public Works fund, and the money this year, as in the past, would be a free grant. “Your union is to be heartily congratulated,” _ said the chairman, “in being the prime movers in saving this enormous sum from tho pockets of the motorists. Thus ends, in failure a raid that was the subject of statements by the Prime Minister, in the Budget, in the House, and in letters to motor organisations. Your warmest thanks are due to Mr Jones for the •active interest he took in the matter and in the successful way in which it was negotiated.”
