MOTOR UNION

NORTH ISLAND [MEETING. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON. April 11. There was a good attendance of delegates at the half-yearly meeting of tho North Island Motor Union to-day, Mr W. O’Callaghan (South Taranaki) presiding. Mr A. J. Toogood (Wellington) moved: “That the. Public Works Department should secure legislation whereby it and local bodies should have power to compel private property owners to remove any obstruction or obstructions, Ln. addition to growth, that obscures the view of motorists at road corners.” “Tho principle is a very wrong one,” said Mr H. W. Short in submitting the followingi remit: “Trat the North Island Motor Union protests to the Minister of Transport against local bodies remunerating traffic inspectors employed by them on . a commission bu3is / from fines secured from motorists for offences under the motor regulations or local by-laws,” Tho remit was carried. Another remit: “Thnt a recommendation be mado to the proper authorities that it be made compulsory foi local authorities to put down whfti lines, indicating where cars can be parked parallel or otherwise to the footpath,” was carried. “That the North Island Motor Union endeavour to put into force a universal sign to stop, in cases 'of urgency, the mottorist travelling immediately ahead, and if thought necessary to apply to the Commissioner of Transport to have this embodied in the motor regulations.” —Carried. Tho union decided in favour of a remit that all speed limits be abolished and that “driving to common danger” be substituted therefor. On tho motion of Mr E. R. B. Holben (Manawatu) it was decided to write to the Main Highways Board asking it to note the condition of the road from Palmerston North to Levin, and from Rangiotu to Himitangi, and inquiring if the board was prepared to take any action in tho direction of improving these roads. The meeting adopted without discussion a Manawatu remit that wherever road construction work requires a sideroad being used, reasonable access should be given to the side-road. A remit “That the portion of the Stock Act, 1908, dealing with the driving of stock,' be reviewed, and action taken to have same amended,” was referred to the Farmers’ Union;
