BRITAIN AND EGYPT
THE LONDON CONFERENCE. DIFFICULT STAGE REACHED. • SAFEGUARDING OF CANAL. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). Received April 11, 11.0 a.m. LONDON, April 10. From the fact that there have been two long sessions of the Anglo-Egyptian conference to-day, it may be taken for granted that the thorniest patches have been reached. Many people are of the opinion that Mr Henderson made a false step in announcing the terms of. the draft treaty before the Wafdists had shown their hands, but it is also believed that the Egyptians now face the real meaning of the extreme limit and are resorting to quibbles, mainly relating to the Suez Canal, concerning which the Australian and New Zealand observers at the conference are showing anxiety. They insist that the canal as a vital link in the Empire chain of communications must be protected by Britain alone.
