HIKURANGI DISASTER.
NEED FOR ROAD DEVIATION. ' MATTER TO 'BE TAKEN UP. (By Telegraph—Special to Standard.) AUCKLAND, April 11. The urgent need for a road deviation at McLeod’s Flat railway crossing, which , was the scene of the Hikurangi disaster on Saturday evening, is to be urged by the Wliangarei Chamber of Commerce, as .a result of a resolution passed last night. The president, Mr J. H. Walker, considered that the chamber’s support should be given in any effort for lessening the risk of another accident such as the recent one. Mr Stringer suggested that the matter should -be taken up with the Wliatigarei County Council, the Main Highways Board and the Auckland Automobile Association. He moved to this effect. A member suggested that more distinctive lights should be fitted to locomotives. Mr Storrar said that the elimination of railway crossings was a great problem, and in this case it was more a matter of road deviation than one for the Railway Department. He thought that the crossing under consideration was the least dangerous between Whangarei and "Hikurangi.
