MEETING OF COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) MARTON, April i: The Rangitikei County Council met. , - Marton to-day, there being present chairman (Cr K. W. Dalrymple) and i , P. Pedersen, G. E. Anderson, D. C. Ij. zioll, A. S. Coleman, Lloyd Hammond, II 1 Belk, W. Doolo and A. Stuart. Cr J. Prin was granted leave, of absence. The Treasury advised payment of 12s 2d, being timber royalty “fifths,” „„ behalf of the State Forest Service.—Riceived. The Public Works Department remitted Government grant money totalling 12037 Is 8d (including" £Bl7 tor unemployment relief works). The same department also forwarded authority for a grant of £IOO (il for £1) on account of Makohine Valiev Road North (£2500). The Public WorkDepartment also advised that the balm,. ,■ of monetary authority for Whaka Road ; r only £415 and stated that a requisition for a further authority is being submitted, hut until it is issued the balance of the eouncil’s claim cannot be paid.—Received. The Main Highways Board wrote declin ing to subsidise the council’s claim for .-a,hire for the bridge inspector employed c.u Turakina anti Vinegar Hill bridges.-It, cbived. '■ Main Highways Board subsidies amounting to £3090 17s lOd were received. The Public Works Department asked the council to submit proposals in regard to works proposed to bo undertaken as unemployment relief works. The department also' declined to subsidise the salary of the traffic inspector.—Regarding tho latter, dis--1 satisfaction was expressed by several councillors and it was resolved to again approach the Main. Highways Board. A request was made by the Main Highways Board that the council submit recommendations in regard to declaring additional main, highways not later, than April 30. Received and left to the engineer to draw , up recommendations. The Commissioner of Crown Lands intimated that Two sections in the Maungakaretu Survey District have been, vested in the council as reserves for travelling stock. These, sections are at Pukeokahu. The same officer also stated that section 13 of block V. Pukeokahu would be vested in the council as a domain if this was acceptable to the council. Suggestions as to a name for the domain were invited.—The council’s object in asking for the vesting jof the reserve was to use it as a roadman’s grazing paddock. As a domain it would not meet the purpose.—lt was decided to apply for a • year-to-year grazing lease. , .V. The Railway Department forwarded an agreement for execution regarding metalstacking sites at' Hihitahi. —The chairman and Cr Doole were empowered to sign the docurqpnt. . ' The Wanganui City Council (the central authority) forwarded the sum of £298 12s 2d, being the Rangitikei County’s share of heavy traffic fees for the quarter ended March 31, 1950. This makes the council’s total for the year close on £2loo.—lteceived... ■ Advce wa’s received from the Manawatu County Council that that body had adopted the recommendatiins made at the conference of representatives of the two councils held at Sandon on -February 28.—Received. The Hawke’s Bay County Council forwarded particulars of its superannuation scheme. Nineteen of its employees have joined the scheme. The amount paid monthly is £7B 9s 9d,.0f which the'cpuncil pays £SO 3s Id'and the employees £2B fs 8d. —Received. , Tho Main Trunk Boys and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs were granted a donation of £5 on the motion of Cr Pedersen. Mr D. Sutherland wrote asking the council to metal abtrnt 15 chains of the Wangaehu Sea Beach Road. —The road inspector is to report to the next meeting. The councillor tor the-riding will accompany the inspector. , The engineer, and the road inspector reported on general work done- during the month, consisting of the -usual maintenance. .The inspector Atated that. the long spell of dry weather had Caused tho roads in ' the lower part, of the county to cut up badly and most'pf them are very rough, especially the Bulls-Turakina, - Bulls-Marton and Marton-Turakina highways. The traffic inspector 'stated that . the total' amount collected in motor drivers’ license fees' for the year ended March 31 last was £449. The clerk and the engineer were appointed a deputation W wait on the Taihape Borough Council in regard to allocating the cost of the proposed new bridge Over tho Hautapu River at Taihape.' MAIN HIGHWAYS. O It was decided to make application to the District Highways Council that the following roads be declared main highways: Rangitikei River to OtUpae, seven miles; road to Otara Bridge, one mile; Cliff Road to Onepuhi Bridge, including Onepuhi Bridge, four miles. The District Highways Council is to be asked to recommend to the Government that the Bection of the road from Otupae Junction to "Kuripapango be declared a Government road, 13£ miles. FINANCIAL STATEMENT. The treasurer reported that the credit balanoe after last meeting’s payments was £16,430 9s 3d; receipts since last meeting totalled £7116 8s 9d; payments since last meeting were . £3680 4s; leaving a credit balance before to-day’s meeting of £19,866 14s; payments authorised to-day were £4626 Os 3d; leaving a credit balance after to-day’s payments of £15,240 13s 9d.
