PERILOUS ADVENTURE

SWAMPING OF A SKIFF. YOUNG MEN’S ADVENTURE. Five young men who were sailing a 16ft skiff from Kilaben Bay to New-, castle. New South Wales, on Sunday, March 23, had more adventure than they bargained for. When they were passing Swansea the sea was very heavy—danger signals had been hoisted further up the coast—and after the skiff had been driven toward Swansea Bar it capsized. Mr J. Fury, the owner and skipper, swam to the shore. The other four men, Messrs D. Green, J. Croft, T. Clack and A. Rowthorne, clung to the upturned craft, ' while a surf boat manned by members of the Nine Mil© Beach Swansea Surf Club put out to their ’ rescue. Aboard the surf boat they did not find 1 themselves out of their troubles, for as it went in .toward shore it was swamped. There was another period ,of treading water, clinging to the bottom of a boat, and waiting'till a lobster boat came out. It was made more exciting than might otherwise have been the case _by the fact that a shark was cruising in the neighbourhood, and taking little notice of the stones thrown from the shore. All the men involved in the second capsize eventually got to shore without further acci.dent. The crew of the skiff required treatment to their hands and feet, which were badly cut by barnacles.
